Just Purchased a Jetta. Maybe a silly question but......

Jut got a Dec 2009 build Jetta 2.0TDI for the wife and can't work out if it should connect to a mobile phone. There was a phone provision book that came with the other near useless manuals. It has the phone symbol on the left of the steering wheel. My phone can't see the vehicle via Bluetooth and when I plug it (Samsung Galaxy S4) into the Media outlet it displays an error message of sorts on the stereo screen. From memory other Golfs we have hired connected without issue although they were Mk6's.

How do I know if the phone is supposed to connect?

It might not actually have the module fitted. Standard Bluetooth was still a couple of years away at the time these were new.

As said above. Unless it has phone buttons on the roof panel near the interior light, it does not have factory fitted Bluetooth. Although aftermarket Bluetooth can be fitted easily enough. 2009 was a bit early fir factory Bluetooth. Most Bluetooth systems fitted from new at that are were dealer fitted systems.

Thanks guys. No it does not have the buttons on the roof console. So I take it that it shouldn't be able to connect through the media port either? I don't understand why they would put the phone button on the steering wheel with no installed way to connect?

Any suggestions for a system that uses the VW interface that is obviously there?

Cost saving. All the cars have them regardless of the spec.

I have used Dension products for a while now. Good quality and cheaper than OEM, and from what I understand, they make OEM stuff.

Which head unit does the Jetta have?

If it has an RCD300/500 (which mine had), I upgraded to an RCD510 (non sat nav touch screen), they're quite cheap at around $200:

VW Genuine RCD510 EU RDS Version 5K0 035 190 B Made IN Portugal | eBay

Then I added the Bluetooth kit:

Genuine Volkswagen Bluetooth KIT FOR Golf Passat Tiguan Polo Jetta EOS Caddy 9W7 | eBay

This works brilliantly for streaming music and connects to my iPhone for hands free phone calls perfectly, and totally OEM so no incompatibility issues.

I watched as one of our fellow forum members fitted the whole lot and it was quite easy, we positioned the bluetooth module behind the headunit and ran the microphone cable up to the OEM space where the interior lights are.

Thanks for the info and the links. It has an RCD310 with the white MFD. I will investigate these options.

And you have the benefit of not having to replace your canbus, I had to replace mine so there was another $100 lol.
