Jetta MK5, Auto Headlights Off

I would like to know if it is possible for the headlights (model not with auto wipers/headlights) to switch off (automatically), rather than to parkers when you leave headlights on when you turn off the engine. I know many other manufactures that have this feature on lower spec cars.

Turn the switch to the off position. have a look in your manual.

probably find if you pull out the key the lights will turn off.

they do not switch off, they go to parkers

Not sure how the non-auto behaves, but leaving the switch in the main beam position should make the lights act as DRLs; switching on and off when the ignition is on/off. There might be a module to deactivate the parkers on in VAG-com under the adaptations section.

Why would a car without automatic headlights switch off automatically?

I'm pretty sure most cars without automatic headlights leave their headlights on if the switch is left on. But realising that this is a common mistake drivers make, VW must've decided to program the car to switch to parkers in this instance, thus preserving the battery and saving the driver from having to call roadside assistance.

I've owned a few (basic!) cars that turn off the headlights once the door is opened and keys are removed. You could always manually override this if you do need the lights on for any reason.

VW's solution above does not seem so user friendly to me - accidentally leave your parkers on instead of your headlights??

I know a basic Camry for one will automatically switch the headlights off if you leave the switch in the on position but take the key out of the ignition. You would have thought that if VW could program the car to make the parkers come on they could also program it to make the lights switch off all together!

The "Town Name" sign marks the entrance to an urban area. Upon passing this sign, several special traffic regulations go into effect:

• Speed limit: 50 km/h

• You may not honk your horn except when necessary to avoid a collision.

• Parking is prohibited within 5 meters of a railroad crossing.

• You must ensure that your vehicle can be seen when parked at night. This may require the use of parking lights if street lighting is inadequate or does not remain on all night. Such lights are marked by a red & white band around the lamp post.
