Seeking advice.
2010 1.6L Manual TDI Jetta, 45000k's. It runs roughly at cold idle (at times) with revs dropping down to 750 rpm and then surging to 1000. It has also cutout a few times. Most driving is fairly short distances at the moment, which I appreciate isn't ideal.
At the recent service I was told that this was (probably) due to the EGR valve being blocked by buildup. They implied that they had a look, which I have no reason to doubt. I was quoted $1000 for replacement, $600 for cleaning it.
So a few questions....
1. Replace or clean. The mechanic leaned towards replacing, but there is a reasonable cost difference. I'd rather clean it if it will last. And are the prices reasonable?
2. Is this going to be recurring or should I drive the first 5 km everywhere in second gear
3. They also suggested a diesel additive, which I'm a bit wary of. Any thoughts?
