Let me know how you go with it. The compressor died in my MK5 GTI also. I've got a few quotes ranging from 1.5-3k to get it fixed. I really just can't justify spending that kind of money on a 10k car that I drove once a month.
My driveplate/shearplate was broken, stopping the compressor shaft from spinning.
Can anyone recommend where to find a replacement? Perhaps a model number or part name?
I've found plenty of replacement clutch pulleys, but this is clutchless.
I tried using the plate from my busted Valeo, but it has a different shaft fitting. For the moment I tack welded the old one, but I'd like to replace it as soon as possible as it's not perfectly concentric.
Compressor model: Delphi 20089 aka Denso 7seu17c

This is the tacked together part. unfortunately I couldnt find any text or part nos on it.

MKV GTI
No luck finding the part so far. A compressor reconditioning place even went as far as telling me that it doesn't exist. Anyway I've decided to live with it for now, doesn't seem to be causing troubles.
If you have a ≤2007 GTI it's likely that the compressor is completely busted. [see here] The swashplates were improperly plated from factory and eventually cause the compressor to seize or grenade. This then either breaks the shearplate or shreds the accessory belt.
What I'd suggest is getting a second hand compressor from a low k car and fitting it yourself.
Used compressors run around $250 for the right models, and I was able to get a mobile AC guy to empty the system then come back to fill it when I'd installed. That cost me $100 but probably varies by the area.
If you want a brand new compressor they're around $650.
Things to watch for:
Make sure the electric plug matches. My new compressor came from a newer model Caddy and I had to splice the harness.
AC tech said the screws in the ac fitting often seize - tap the bit with a hammer before trying to loosen them.
Check the compressor didnt shoot out metal into the AC lines. if it did you'll need a flush and a replacement receiver drier.
I was able to do everything in an hour or so on Jackstands. 13mm for mounting bolts, 17mm to move the tensioner. T45 for the AC lines.
