GOlf 2.0L FSI Oil Filter Housing Leak

Hi All,

Just traced an oil leak on my Mum's Mk5 back to what appears to be the Oil Filter/Cooler housing. It's getting quite bad and is leaving a fair few drops even after only an hour sitting on a driveway. It looks like it's coming from where the housing meets the block.

If anyone knows of a DIY to replace these seals that would be greatly appreciated! It seems to be a pretty common problem with the 2.0L N/As and even the GTIs it seems (must use the same housing?)

Alternatively, a DIY on removing the intake manifold would also be great so I can at least access the area better.

Any extra advice is greatly appreciated (part no.s for the the seals etc )

I've done a few of these lately. They're a pain.

Parts wise, you'll need the rubber gasket that goes between the housing and the engine block, the one between the heat exchanger and the housing, and it's also worth doing the two PCV breather hoses as well, as you can't do one of them without taking the manifold off anyway.

Also, there's a fair chance you'll break the dipstick tube getting the manifold off, so factor one of those in as well.

The dearest parts were the two PCV hoses, at around $160 for the pair. Dipstick tube price will vary depending where you get it from, but probably around $20, and the two gaskets are about $45 the pair, off the top of my head.

There's a high chance of oil/coolant cross-contamination, too. So definately dump the coolant.

Check the filter housing itself too. Often the plastic gets brittle and starts to crack/fail.

Yeah, and the drain valves on them lose spring tension and leak.

From doing some investigating it looks like I've got the same problem.

My local dealer quoted me $143 for the housing/block gasket and $33 for the housing/heat exchanger gasket.

Do you still have these in stock Umai?

No, not anymore. Eventually sold what I had, and didn't bother to re-stock.

Most people are just happy to get it cleaned off every service, due to the work involved in replacing the seals.

It's getting quite bad so I think I am going to go ahead and fix it.
If I were to take it to a non-dealer specialist do you have any idea what I would be expecting to pay?
