Headlight problems. (help!)

Hi guys, recently bought a Golf R32 and new here. Not sure if this is the right place to post this..

I have been having a problem with the headlights since I bought it, sometimes the drivers side headlights wont turn on and the bulb light on the dash will only come on occasionally.
My partner took out the lights to look at it and this is what we found..


My partner says the ignitor seems to be burnt as well and we may need to replace that as well as the globe.
Could anyone help us with what we should do?
Would it be fine to just replace the globe?
Is it safe to drive without a globe inside the ignitor? When we unlock the car it makes a loud buzzing sound and it kind of scares me =/

That's quite a mess.

More than just the globe needs replacing, I think — that it turns on occasionally suggests the the globe isn't blown, so replacing it without attending to the bad contacts would be fruitless.

The buzzing sound might be arcing, does it happen when the headlight switch is in the 'off' position or only in 'auto'? If it happens in 'off' then it's probably nothing to do with the lights — might only be the fuel pump priming the system or even from the audio system setting itself up.

I'd expect the car to be safe to drive without a globe in the light, but it wouldn't be roadworthy (even in daylight...) and therefore not legal.

The dash lamp problem might be part of the same fault, but you really do need to have the electric system checked over by a competent technician.

The buzzing noise was actually coming from the ignitor when we tried to turn on the lights without a bulb in it, it doesnt happen otherwise. We think the globe needs replacing because of how it is burn at the bottom and doesnt fit into the ignitor properly.

Would anyone know where to get parts for these?

The part you need is a D2S globe, these are readily accessible via eBay, you will want to source genuine Phillips globes they are somewhat more expensive but this is what you need. I would recommend purchasing 2 globes as the colour temperature changes with usage and one will appear more blue than the other once you replace the faulty one( standard factory colour temp is 4300k the other will be around 5000k dependant upon usage). The buzzyIng sound you hear is the igniter trying to fire up the globe as there is a high resistance joint at that headlight. Once you get the new globes I recommend you clean the contacts on the D2S connector with either emery paper or fine 2000 grit sandpaper prior to replacement of the globes. Regards Greg

I will look into a new globe tomorrow, So do you think the ignitor is ok still considering its abit burnt on the insides ?
