    Fuel leak

    Hi everyone,
It seems my Golf has developed a fuel leak, and after taking it to the mechanic (my brother) he hasn't been able to find the leak. Is this a common problem? Is there a particular place they leak?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for replying. The fuel filter has not been changed and the leak is from the back of the engine.

On the drivers side? The fuel lines on the MK5 and Mk6 Golf's run down the drivers side of the car from the fuel tank, through the fuel filter, underneath the driver and then up into the engine compartment.

Now, im not sure if the diesels are any different to the petrol's, but the petrol models use a poly/nylon type material for the fuel line, so its possible that either the line itself is damaged, or perhaps one of the connections are leaking.

If you jack the drivers side of the car up, there is a large black plastic tray with 8-10 plastic screws that you can remove and gain access to the fuel line for inspection. With this cover removed, you can follow the fuel line all the way from the fuel filter up to the engine.

    Hi Lucas,

The smoke is coming from under the bonnet, passenger side, the corner right in front of the windscreen. The car is diesel. I will pass that info onto my mechanic, as I'm sure he would understand it a whole lot more that me!

Oh wow so its actually burning/smoking? That sounds dangerous as that means the fuel is dripping onto something hot (eg the exhaust) and causing it to burn/smoke. If thats the case then it could cause a fire.

Are you 100% its fuel and not some other liquid thats leaking?

I dont know the layout of the diesel engine bay well enough to know off the top of my head what components are located in that area of the engine bay (passenger side firewall). I'll do some investigating.

Thank you. The bro said he had already checked the lines and there is no fuel line where the leak was. Any chance you know where I can get my hands on a workshop manual?
