Yup common on the 2L TDI's.
99% of the time its the Regulator flap EGR valve.
(Intake manifold flap on the throttle body gets stuck)
Min was replaced under warranty at 36K 30 months ago.
Have seen them in pommy land e-stores but none in Australia.
Am looking for someone who stocks it for 'next time'.

What does the Regulator flap EGR valve do? I've had this message for 4 months now with no performance issues. The dealer charged me $800 to replace the fan control unit and that didn't fix it and they now say that its this flap and it will be another $800. Both units must be on the same fuse circuit which seems to me to be cheap emgineering.

With all the diagnostic equipment they have and VAG-com they made an incorrect diagnosis?
Take it back and say 'fix it for the price I already paid'.

My memory says it controls exhaust gas entry back into the combustion chamber, failure leads to higher NOx levels (I stand to be corrected).

As I said before VERY common - bad batch of flap motors produced. No recalls, just replace when idiot light comes on under warranty. Just pray it's done under warranty $$$.

The EGR - exhaust gas recycling is added to the inlet just prior to the black plastic w way maniflod just prior to the head. It's right beside the oil dipstick. The first lower part is a "throttle flap", but it isn't a throttle per say, more a flap that is used both to cut air flow on shutdown to prevent judder or run on, and mainly to block the inlet air to create a vaccuum for the subsequent EGR valve that introduces exhaust gas. The whole reason is to lower NO emissions by lowering the inlet O2 and thus combustion temps. The inlet is 2.5" per and post intercooler, then hits this nasty 1.9" square edged ( inside ) flap, and this is a definate flow bottleneck. More to the point, with the sheer amount of oil vaur crankcase blowby entering just prior to the turbo, once combined with EGR, makes for thick black sludge, that eventually gums everthing up, and had destroyed a few flap mechanisms on this forum alone. The EGR also get to the point of sticking, and it appears this causes weird response and surging on the UK seat forums - where they run the same VW based 2.0 TDI.

The only solution is to ignore it and prey for warranty, get a Provent or similar oil seperator to lower oil vapour, and o have VW or a similar workshop do a EGR "flush". I guess you could also trade up your TDI prior to 100k, but EGR and sludge is the biggest problem facing modern diesels today.

Thanks for all the above info guys. Given me a much better appreciation of problem and arguments to use with dealer. Car is well out of warranty but I seem to have a strong argument along the lines of why replace the FCU when that has nothing to do with emissions and the MFD message was "Emissions Garage". Apart from the fact that from what you say this is a not uncommon problem.
I'm also chasing VW down because I sent them a query about this through their web site - where they invite contact - and haven't had any response. Pretty poor. There's more to a car than just buying it - service is how they get repeat sales. If I don't get anything from VW Australia I'll get directly on to their HO to give the locals a rev up.

    Hi All,

I have this same issue with my Jetta 06 TDI and have been dealing with it for some time.

My mechanic has already changed the EGR valve and they said the next thing to try is replacing the throttle body (which the EGR mounts to).

They told me that the computer diagnostic states EGR. When they changed the valve, it was still EGR put had a different 'branch' off it.

The car drives fine and the only thing a notice is like steam, similar to if a car overheating, coming out from under the bonnet. Most notable at night when headlights are on. I'm told this is related to the EGR and the value not closing to allow gas to go through?

Can anyone help? Does this sound right?

    Cheers

    Andrew

Many thanks for the aforementioned data, gentlemen. helped me understand the issue at hand and the points I might make to the dealer. Even though my car is out of warranty and the MFD read "Emissions Garage," I feel like I have a solid case for why I shouldn't have to repair the FCU. Besides the fact that, from what you've said, this appears to be a rather common issue.
I'm also trying to track down VW because I contacted them about this issue on their website (which expressly encourages such contact) and have yet to hear back. It's not great. More than just making the initial purchase, after-sale support is what keeps customers coming back for more. If I don't hear from VW Australia, I'll go on their HO and fire up the locals. wordle today

    Hi dejawitting

VW Australia is not going to get back to you from the internet form.
There will be no warranty or good will for your 10 to 15 year old car.

Best to get to an independent workshop for advice, if you don't have the diagnostic tools to troubleshoot the issue.
