    DPF replacement options

    G'day All

Was getting a service done and the DPF was checked. Apparently it is full and needs replaced. They quoted $5000 for a new DPF plus fitting. So was wondering if i have any other options such as buying a new DPF from the UK if it's cheaper there and getting it fitted locally. The car is a 2008 2.0 GT TDI and has hit 290000 km. I do about 1000 km a week so I'm pretty sure i would be burning off all the soot i can possibly get rid of on my daily drive to work. Don't want to get rid of the car but 5K + fitting is a bit much for me. Thanks in advance for any info posted.

    Regards
    Devza

Going to post this in the diesel section as well since it seems a better option.

For now the best option are these, rebuilt DPF's out of Europe about $700 plus $100 post, straight bolt in. As to whether or not they are just recooked or brand new cores, that's worth asking about. There's also a DPF regeneration process at Western Filter in Sydney, and I can vouch for the fact a properly washed out DPF works fine, I'm 75k into my own one washed out by Gurney now. The Western Filter process is a proper one.

My own version is still a ways off, a lot involved in getting that legally passed, but it is happening!

There's always the option of removal rather than replacement but its very naughty.

That's what I would do. Lots of diesel vehicles are sold here without a DPF.

The fact that you got 290 000kms on a dpf shows you do alot of highway driving and got a really good run from your dpf.
Its not the soot mass that makes it worn out. Its the ash mass (basically what cant be burnt off by a regen). This measurement is the 'service life' of the filter.

My only concern with the cleaning option is that there is no guarantee of the integrity of the dpf core. You may get another 200k... you may only get 20k.. no way of telling.

Removing the dpf won't work as the sensors rely on the pressure and temperature difference created by the filter.

I can only recommend genuine although pricey the quality is there. But I havent seen enough cleaned/reconditioned dpfs to say definitely good cheaper option or not

Indeed, but a lot of those rely on urea injection instead (Adblue etc.)... Although VW diesels are generally cleaner than Australian law requires it is still illegal to remove any anti-pollution gear - even if the car still meets Australian standards without it..

That said 290,000 is a very good lifespan..

At that mileage I would consider replacing the car rather than just the DPF, especially if it's daily ride. The yearly repair bills could be very close to the payment of a brand new car. But, you may be lucky and do another 200k without a problem.

I meant all the "light commercial" vehicles. No adblue, no DPF but have a 4-cylinder TD. Hilux, Triton, Ranger, etc.

You cant compare those cars as they dont meet the same emission standards. Vw commercial have had adblue & dpf for as long as passenger and well exceed emission laws.

Yes, and any of these "light commercial" vehicles sold in Europe would need either of these to comply.. They don't need it to comply in Australia so the respective manufacturers don't fit them here - VW did fit a DPF even though they'd probably still have passed our lower standards without doing so.. The point I was trying to make was that because VW imported these vehicles with a DPF you can't legally remove it regardless of what the emissions standards say...

p.s. We have plenty of "Euro V" compliant trucks (as in bigger than light commercials) so they're becoming more commonplace..
