The people I know who have done it says the shudder at idle isn't worth it. The DMF isn't just for refinement, especially in a TDI

Bought mine from ECS when I was in US a few months ago. Around $650 US, genuine vw. Also got the flywheel bolts. Having it installed today, $670. 6hr job. So the labour they quoted is pretty spot on. When I was ringing around for DMF here it was around $1500 too.

Over in the UK the Skoda dealers do the SMF conversion on 1.9TDIs under Skoda/VW instructions rather than fit a new DMF.

They use Valeo4 kits without complaints. Some of the other brands appear to introduce vibrations.

NB: on a DMF setup the clutch disc is solid & the "damping" is done in the DMF. On a SMF setup the clutch disc has springs / rubber bumpers. I imagine that the units with vibration issues might be under-done in the spring damping.

Partno for yours should be 835035. Cost is $800 - $900 landed in AUS. try RockAuto, eBay or Valeo direct

I think I'm due for one, although it's been rattling away for years and slowly getting worse. My options are keep the car and replace for probably half the value of the car, or don't replace and keep car til it dies or Trade.

    I'm torn!
