Dead Turbo - 1.9 Tdi

Friday evening (doesn't it always happen on a weekend?)my wife rings me up saying her car is lacking power and making a whistling noise. I had a look at it, and noticed that the rubber hose on the intake was getting sucked in - that was where the whistling noise came from as it sucked air in. Seemed like a blockage, but I couldn't find anything, so we dropped it to Ultratune (closest mechanic) on Monday.

Their diagnosis - Dead Turbo with snapped shaft, and a catalytic converter full of oil. Estimate = $6,000 just for parts!!!

Not happy in a 4y.o. car with 70k that is regularly serviced
Anyway, a few more phone calls and we have had the car towed on a flat bed up to Skippers for a more competitive quote. Bloody towie then decides to drive it off the truck, spewing oil everywhere - some days you just can't win

Common on those cars unfortunately
I have several good turbos here for a lot cheaper than list price.
I would need car year model, VIN and engine code to ensure you got the right Turbo.

You can get a sports 100/200 cel cat fitted by any 1/2 decent exhasut place for around $3-$400, unless the diesels run special cats(?)

Yes, it is quite common.

Drop into your local Volkswagen dealer, and have a chat with them, and see what your options are. If you've got good service history within the VW dealer network, you may get some assistance from them. The last one we did, VW went 50/50 on parts and labour with the customer, and the car was an '05 model. Even then, the customer still cried about it. But what can you do?

Is it worth contacting the insurance company perhaps? Could be a write off if it's 4 years old and it'll cost that much to fix it...

Skippers have already put a claim request into VW, will hopefully hear back tomorrow. They also think the cat will be fine once it burns all the oil out (that should really give diesels a bad name for smoke).

Really need it back for next weekend so I can tow my Goggomobile to the Collie race meet.

We have done heaps of them, cant remember the price but we can definently beat that price. give me a call tomorrow on 9663 3072 and ill see what i can do

Things are actually happening now, parts will be in today.

I must say how impressed we are with both John Hughes Skipper Volkswagen and VW Australia. The service team at John Hughes have been exceptionally helpful, and VW have offered to pay 100% of parts and70% of labour.

Thanks also for the offers of cheaper turbos from members on here, but I don't think you can beat that. Kudos to VW

It's sad that it surprises me, but still kudos to VW.
