cracked brake rotors

Hi

My Rear brake rotors have multiple cracks and the pads have about 10% left
The front RHS rotor also has multiple cracks and the front pads 85% left
it's done about 189K
the front rotors ("replaced?" about 2 years ago) calliper 24mm
Backs were replaced seven ago due to cracks calliper 8.9mm

1: are these dangerous if so how dangerous(I'm getting them all replaced but need to know how far I can drive as the preferred repairer is 100k away

2: the backs were the genuine VW so is there a more reliable aftermarket variety?

There are lots of good aftermarket rotors most will be more expensive tho i used german zimmerman rotors on my car very good quality also if your doing a complete pad/rotor change check out ate ceramic brake pads more expensive but give you a really nice progressive pedal feel and last longer also no black dust over your wheels to clean off

Are ceramic pads 2x price wise?

The cracks extend all way from inner to outer in a jagged manner ( like a lightning bolt) in at least 2 places usually about 15º – 25º apart

They've either been worn undersize, or had a lot of heat put through them.

Personally, I wouldn't trust them.

From memory for golf r brakes (slightly bigger pad than normal) was 165 for fronts and 135 for rears i think
Totally worth it for me as the pedal feel is sublime and progressive no grabby brakes on 1st bite and no need to clean wheels except to blow dust off with the pressure wash gone from washing wheels by hand at least weekly if not more often to only washing them once every 3 mths

fronts got "replaced" or at least I paid for them to be less than 2 years ago the pads are 85%
LHS calliper measured 24mm & RHS 24.3mm minimum is 22mm ... the RHS rotor is cracked

backs did get replaced over 6 years ago as they were both cracked back then both are cracked again?...
LHS 9.2mm & RHS 8.9 mm with minimum of 8mm the pads are about 10%

We've owned it since new, serviced it more that required and most of the kilometres is Blue Mountains to Dubbo and back to visit daughter & grandkids ... we rarely ever go further east of Penrith .. no city driving
I'm 65 and wife 61 we don't race or even speed .. can't afford it

Early ones had issues with the handbrake cables being just a fraction too short. As the suspension moved through its range, it was enough to pull a slight amount of tension on the cable, enough to cause a slight drag in the rear brakes. Although I doubt it'd do enough to crack the discs.

What's your driving style down the declines at the Blue Mountains ?

Is it possible they are cracked due to overheating/warping/lack of engine braking ?

Either way - just get them changed but 100km away seems quite far away .. but if you've been driving on cracked rotors for a while ... maybe you might make it to the shop in one piece. DBA make replacement rotors.

You might want to consider finding a friendly, local, independent, VW-specialist mobile mechanic, who can come to you and replace the pads and rotors at your place.

If my memory serves me correctly, I understand that there is a bloke on this forum who might fit that description . . .
