    Buying a Mk5 Golf with 200k+ kilometers

    ***
So I posted this over in the Newbies section, but it may be more appropriate here. I've added a bit more detail about me and my background/what brings me here on that thread in the Newbie section. I think these questions are more appropriate here in what I hope is the right forum.
Mods - please let me know if this is not ok.

I'm looking at buying a used '05 Golf Mk5 with over 200,000 K's on it as a private sale.

With this many K's - I guess its more about how the car has been looked after and the service log will be very important.

There are a few things I'm hoping you guys can help me work out:

    1. I am assuming that it will still have give me 150-200,000 more if it has been maintained properly. Is this reasonable?
    2. What things to look for in the service log, when checking out a vehicle with this many K's?
    3. A good mechanic in Inner or East Melbourne familiar with VW's and can do an pre-purchase inspection?
    4. Any other tips would be appreciated to

I've already researched here and other forums and found stuff on 1 & 2.
#1 - if it's been serviced, I shouldn't have too many issues. I'm looking at manual so the DSG shouldn't be an issue.
    # 2 - the big one seems to me to ensure its had at least two timing belts done. Anything else big?

    Hope you guys can help!

The life of a vehicle is not only dependant on the mileage but how it's been driven. Some cars do lots of short trips & are started frequently to get access to another vehicle in a driveway for instance.[lots of cold starts] Often people selling high mileage cars will say mainly country driving. You also need to tell us which engine is fitted.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

Need to know which engine & gearbox.

Condition is everything but I'd use the mileage to screw the price right down and I'd also have an expectation that servicing costs will be on the increase as things wear out no matter how careful you drive.

Yeah the idea was to trade $$ for K's and negotiate down.
I did negotiate and in the end we couldn't agree on a price - so I walked away. The search continues. Thanks for the help.

Hopefully you left him you number as he'll probably be stuck with it for a while. Not many people are willing to take on high mileage cars - most people seem to get scared beyond 100,000km.

    You never said which engine.
