Most likely all MKV aircon compressor has to have the same bolt pattern and connecting pipes...
From these two URLs R32 and GTI aircon compressor has the same 3 bolts pattern.

I think you're right japtaxi. The MK5 and some MK6 share the same compressor. The models just have slightly different flow rates by the look of things.
I'm booked in for a diagnostic at Mr Cool, Milton Friday. Over the phone they indicated around $1475 for new comp and dryer with all new parts, flush and recharge. Sounds like the most expensive but knowledgable place. Hopefully they're the only things I e need done and the compressor hasn't suffered the Black Death. Diagnosis is free (or just included in the fee later when you get them to do something).
Apparently they used to do warranty jobs for Austral VW dealer. Compressor is an aftermarket one, didn't say what it was but told me they've sold fitted about 65 of them to VAG cars in the last 12 months or so. Sound like they've seen a lot of these cases.

Update- second car I've owned that needs a complete AC system replacement. Evaporator has a leak. Evaporator, tx valve, condenser and compressor and dryer all need to be replaced. System flush too. $3400 for the whole job.
Well. That's the worst possible outcome.
