    Aftermarket DVD/GPS?

Hey guys I have a late 08 Golf GT. It's got an RCD300 stereo in it. Pretty basic.
I noticed on ebay you can pick an aftermarket DVD/Satnav stereo for between $300-600. I also noticed RNS510 for about $1000.

Has anyone tried the aftermarket one's? Anyone had any bad experiences? Has the GPS worked ok? Do they work with the steering wheel controls? Is it worth the extra cash for an RNS510?

    Thanks

Save yourself the trouble and get the RNS510, plugs straight in (assuming you don't need a CAN gateway) and you'd spend the difference on dash kits and steering wheel control devices with after market setups.

The aftermarket headunits from waywell et alia are complete rubbish and cheapen the car.

The link posted above should give you an idea of all the problems you may/will experience. A heap of golfmkv forums members sent their units back and ended up being out of pocket for the unit and didn't receive one back.

The RNS 510 is worth every cent IMO.

I have to agree with Maverick on this one, I purchased one of the Asian imports and had it in my GT for about 4 months. It looked the part and everything worked OK until the Gremlins started crawling out of it, things just kept getting worse from there. The seller was very helpful and tried everything to rectify the issues (touch screen freezing, slow operation etc......) a firmware upgrade saw it run much better but by then I'd already lost confidence in it and sold it on eBay. The buyer actually contacted me a few weeks after purchasing to say that he was having issues as well, different to mine The original Asian seller that I purchased it from helped him out with technical advice but I doubt the unit would remain stable. I've had the RNS510 for about 12months and I'm very happy with it. Personally I'd stay well clear of non OEM headunits and put the extra $'s towards the RNS510. Don't forget to make sure that your car has the upgraded CANBUS as well to avoid the battery drain issue with the RNS, there's plenty of info about it on the forum if you search for it.
