2005 golf diesel 6 spd manual gearbox problem

SORRY CAN SOMEONE PUT IN MK4 FORUM PLZ

hey guys

got a friend with a 2005 golf diesel with gearbox problem

she reports driving, shifted into 1st then 2nd, couldnt get 3rd (grinding) couldnt get 4th (grinding)

pulled over

1st and 2nd were ok with engine off, still couldnt access 3rd 4th 5th or 6th,

local shop has quoted 7 grand (for a 3 grand car) which seems like a heap of bull**** to me and probably cos shes a young woman

this sounds like potentially shift linkage failure to me... doesnt sound like clutch, but I guess it could be slave?

what are common failure modes for the 6spd manual?

also can 6spd mk5 gearboxes be used on mk4 engines? or no way?

2005 golf TDI 6spd sounds like a mk5 so I've moved it to there instead. Happy to be corrected though
