    2004 vw golf radio replacement

I am looking to replace the radio ( cant read the screen) in my 2004 MK5 with another that I just bought. It is a RCD300 from a 2008 Golf. Will this fit perfectly? Do I need the code for the replacement? Anyone on the Sunshine Coast available? cheers

Yes it will fit, it will need a code, and if its an RCD310 you will likely also need to replace your canbus gateway module with a minimum revision L to prevent battery drain.

You won't need to upgrade the gateway.
If the local dealer won't help you just google VW radio codes and you can pay $15 and get it online

Just rang Cricks VW at Maroochydore. Spoke to Ross in Service and he had the code to me in under an hour. Awesome attitude.
Now, how to swap them over. Where do I start to take the old one out?

I used this video as a guide when changing mine: YouTube - you'll need a T20 screwdriver and some trim removal tools, but it's a pretty easy job!

Be careful when removing the radio surround (the panel below the vent), it's easy to break the clips that hold it in. Gently pry all around and avoid flexing the panel too much.

^^ this, although I’ve broken about half the clips holding it on (removing/refitting the radio about 5 times!) and it still looks factory fresh, so it’s not the end of the world if you break a couple.
