    2.0 TFSI cam locking tool

    Hi Guys

Picked up a MK5 GTI a few weeks ago and its got the dreaded diesel rattle. I am about to order the timing chain and tensioner and replace it, but would love to know if anyone on here has the tools required that I can rent is them? Its alot of money to buy the tool and only use it once or twice. Any help will be appreciated.

Hello mate. Did you buy a MK5 GTI or a MK5 Diesel? You said GTI which is infact a petrol and has a timing belt, infact so does the diesel. I think you are abit confused. The MK5 GTI doesn't need any locking tools to perform the timing belt change, the TDI does, which you can find a set on Ebay for quite cheap. Just ensure you have a DIESEL and not a PETROL? Also ensure when ordering the parts you say timing belt and tensioner, not timing chain, as you will hit a brick wall. Also be sure your timing belt is making the noise? Perhaps a idler of some sort? Other than that it's probably not your timing belt...

P.S: Best to order the whole timing kit which will include tensioner, rollers, belt etc. and also order a waterpump aswell, best to get one with a metal impeller.

It does have a chain to mate as well as the belt, between the cams right hand side of the engine where the vac pump bolts on.

Never knew there was a chain too.

My GTI has always had a diesel like rattle but hasn't got worst in 100k.

I wonder how bad/loud the noise gets before you should replace the chain.

Gone are the days where the manufacturer would cast a hex in the cam for you to put a spanner on, to hold it in place.

    Hi Guys

Quick update. Bought a locking tool of Ebay, about $40 usd cheaper then anywhere else. Got a timing chain and tentioner kit from ECS Tuning (they where out of stock so it took forever to get here). Replaced it this afternoon and soo glad I did. No more knocking and smooth as butter. The tentioner had some bad wear and even some material missing on the lower side.
