1.9 Golf MKV Tdi opinions? (MY06)

    Hey all,

I just wanted to get the community's general opinion on an MY06 Golf MK5 TDI 1.9 Comfortline ?
Basically, I just want to see the pro's and cons of the vehicle and if it's a decent choice for a P-Plater.

I've done a decent amount of research, and I've concluded the following:

    Pros :

    • small, easy to drive compared to sedans ( ie; euro's, imprezas etc. )
    • Tdi is super fuel efficient (~6L/100km)
    • decent re-sell value
    • On about 120,000km's and just had the major service done for 120k km's.

    Cons:

    • I hear a lot of people say there's issues with the transmission for the auto's (DSG)?
    • He has mentioned there is a weird knock sound in the car, but he had a mechanic check it out and said that's nothing to worry about ?
    • Owner seems to be a much more older male, ie; less likely to have thrashed it etc.
    • Parts are expensive and take time
    • Services are expensive too

Any input helps, thanks guys !

    Good cars.

    1.9L engine is virtually bomb-proof.

DSG, if it's driving ok now, it'll last forever.

Service parts are cheap enough genuine, through the dealer, and easy to get.

    Oil filter $20
    Sump plug (single use) $4.50
    Air filter $45
    Pollen filter $35
    Fuel filter $65
    DSG filter $40
DSG oil I'd go non-genuine with either Liqui Moly or Febi, at around $25/L (you'll need 5).
Engine oil is around $75-$100 depending on the brand.
Timing belt kit is about $350.
Water pump is around $150 exchange.

The service prices themselves will vary depending on who's doing it. Independant specialists will be around 1/2-3/4 of the price of a dealer.

Cheers for that, it was actually very re-assuring !
I can't describe the sound since I haven't heard it for myself, but have you ever heard of anything like this before with Tdi's?
