Smile Octavia is smaller inside than expected and few minor problems

    Hi boys,
Had my Octy, 1.9 TDI wagon, manual - since 30 December... has done 3K already...
its been good so far... very pleasant drive.... fuel economy is improving...
    First 1000km - average - jus over 7litres per 100km
    Second 1000km - average 6.5 litres
Third 100km- averaging close to 6 litres and its still improving....
Few minor problems: when I'm doing a turn during parking my car and when a wheel is almost at the end of turn - i can hear sound of metal somewhere under...
asked skoda initially to fix - they tried but problem still exists
second problem - when weather is hot electrical windows at the front become very noisy when going down
third problem - just noticed recently - getting some fume inside of the cabin... can't work out if that is from fron or back....
    ANYONE HAS SIMILAR PROBLEMS?

and another thing.... i have 3 kids to carry... 2 of them require child seats....
i'm little bit disappointed as its a nightmare to fix those seats every time... and when third child trying to fix a seatbelt - its very and very difficult because of other 2 child seats....
I've had corolla before - and i didn't have this problem.....
so its a potential warning to families with 2 or more kids...

    Thanks

Good to hear that you enjoy driving your Skoda and are happy with the fuel economy, but I'm sorry to hear of your problems. Most Skoda owners in Australia seem to have very few problems with their cars, so hopefully you can get yours sorted out too.

I would be going back to the dealer with the steering problem and asking them to fix it properly this time. Unless it is simply reaching full lock and you are trying to force the steering wheel past where it is designed to go.

If the fumes you can smell might be from the engine's exhaust please be very careful, these can make you sick or even drowsy enough to have an accident. If it is only a very faint smell then it is less dangerous, but I would be asking the dealer to look at that anyway, and ask them if it is dangerous (that should get their attention).

Sometimes a small amount of silicon lubricant sprayed into the window channels (guides) can help them go up and down more easily, if it doesn't then there may be a more serious issue. Again, this is covered by warranty so ask your dealer to fix it.

I am surprised you didn't check more carefully that the car was difficult to set up child seats and didn't have room for your two child seats and 3rd child before you bought the car. It is really up to the purchaser to check whether a car meets a specific requirement like that or not.

I took our baby seat in with us. Its a huge one though and has enough room for two other people, but really the rear seat in any car this size is only for 2 and a bit.

    Thumbs up

I just went to Skoda today, and they found there was a loose bolt on the sway bar.... i believe this will fix the problem as noise has disappeared...
windows were lubricated.... will wait till the hot weather to check if all is good...
and with fumes - they couldn't find any leaks... I'll be observing this now with more attention...
as for child seats... i just could never imagined that Octy could be slightly smaller inside than corolla... but that is not a big deal anyway.... just inconvinience ...

MIght not be smaller as much as the anchors are in a different place. They are a bit further in than normal. Also the heavier bolstering will make a fair difference in the way they sit, a Corollas back seat is pretty dead flat.

I disagree about the baby chair. I actually tried installing my baby chair in my SS (VY II v8 5.7l) and the seat belt just fits around the baby chair. The Skoda stretches alot compared to the Skoda making it easier to install. Just my opiniion

the fumes might be the fact that the car is new - baking paint, cat convertor & lubricants burning off. mine was stinky for the first few thousand km.

The Octavia definately isn't 3 seats across the back - the centre hump kills that idea. Not sure about kids seats - mine won't have them in the Skoda but insist on keeping them in SWMBOs Outlander.

i agree with jacob though - Even big cars can be bitches to fit seats & capsules to.

......... Not sure i'd buy an Octavia for 3 kid family. Would stick with Falcadore unless you are skinny buggers.

    Smell of oil

Think I saw a thread about this on Briskoda?

"Lift up the rear seats, then remove the circular cover. under that is the fuel tank sender, pump housing.

Theres a big locking ring around the top, make sure that is tight and not leaking."

    Also

"Does the PD130 have injector leak off pipes?

These return fuel that wasn't injected back to the next one and then down to the fuel cooler and eventually back to the tank.

Common for these to go occasionally on older cars so if it has them get them checked.

Otherwise I'd be checking all your fuel lines, especially those by the fuel filter for leaks and also check your intercooler pipes as they can leak at the joins with the EGR/IC and I would think that would smell quite dervy, although it would be more burn derv than otherwise.

Also have a look under the car to make sure you have not damaged any of the fuel lines on debris."

    and
"My Octavia 20 valve was smelling of oil and it went into the dealer 3 times and they said nothing was wrong. I wrote to Skoda and got a free pollen filter but it still smelt. I took it around the corner to the garage that fixes my Triumph Stag and he found a split breather pipe very quickly. Ordered and fitted new one. smell gone. "
