If I was looking for another car today then I'd probably try & find a 2nd hand 1.8tsi manual Yeti, a Superb of some description (and live wit the DSG) or if I had to buy new then an Amorok tsi manual or a Roomster 77tsi manual

I'd also have a quick look at a Mini Clubman Cooper & the GT220

Cross shopped the Subaru Liberty and Mazda 6 wagons but value for money and that fun factor sold me on the Octavia RS. Because I'm impatient I recon next time I'll check out second hand Skodas to save on wait time and depreciation.

As others have mentioned I also like the look of the Megane GT220 although I haven't taken one for a spin.

I considered a used Subaru Liberty and / or a used vRS. (One for play, one for daily !)
Maybe if I get pissed off waiting I'll reconsider that. Nothing on the "new car" front excites except above the 80k bracket. (Volvo polestar, Audi S4 ...)

I was looking (2nd hand so no waiting) If I didn't get the Octavia it would have been either a yeti in manual (rare!)

    an Audi A4 S-Line
or a a Mini Clubman, I wanted the mini but the ridiculous amount wanted for a tow bar knocked that on the head

Forrester TDI. At least Subaru will still sell you a diesel with manual gearbox - unlike Skoda now.

Have you driven one? It has absolutely no nuts. Gotta rev the bejeesus out of it. Not to mention the dpf issues they have. Avoid Subaru diesels. While you can have dpf issues in any new diesel, there are certain models that have lots more issues than other due to the way they handle regeneration. Mazda's diesel is another (although the Mazda diesel is gutsy at least)
