What are the quietist Tyres for an Ocatvia RS

Hi all

We need to change the tyres on our Octavia RS (Has 225/40/1. The Dunlop sport Maxx's are horrendously noisy.

I plan to do the sound proofing as per the trhread on that topic here, but has anyone found a tyre that is actually quiet.

When the noise first started we were told by our dealer that the alignment was out and were recomended a pro wheel aligning Co to look at it. they found all the wheels out by the same amount ( caused apparently by them using the settings for a standard TSI) attemts to get the correct settings out of VW Aust. were met with evasion and stalling like it was some kind of trade secret, and we still have not managed to get them after nearly 10 months. But that is another story.

The UK forum says that you have to keep the wheel alignment at the absolute smallest settings to calm the noise down and avoid the Dunlops (Some on there recomend Vredestien's). So we are about to get new Tyres and have the Alignment set to the correct figures ( provided the Aligners have more luck than me with getting the settings out of VW)

I would realy value your opinions on what Tyres will be best, Naturally we want grip as well but we are not hard drivers so super high performance is not a priority just good grip with a quiet tyre.

Continental's are meant to be pretty quiet

Maybe have a look at dB decibel V550? They seem to marketed with low noise in mind... No idea what they are like on handling, tyre wear, or price though.

Small tread blocks = quite tyres. Big blocks = noisy tyres. You also need the blocks to be of varying sizes to avoid resonant hum.

I had Continental Sport 2 tyres on my RS originally and replaced them with Michelin PS3. The Michelin's are quieter, cheaper, handle as well or better and look to be wearing better also.

Thanks GUys - I particularly like the look of the dB decibel V550 suggested by Daft1014, thansk for that link, even our tyre dealer had not suggested them and they look perfect.
Has anybody here ever tried them on an RS wagon?

I don't think the Yokohama db comes in the right size for the RS. 225/40x18 isn't it?
Toyo Teo are quiet - 235/40x18 though.

I thought the CSC2 on my Elegance were bloody noisy - especially when they got below 50%. Now running Michelin Primacy & they are much better. For you, the Michelin PS2, Goodyear Eagle F1 or Pirelli PZero might be worth a look. Truly, almost anything will be better than the Dunlops.

My best mate in NZ does wheel alignments for a living - do you want me to ask him what the factory specs are& what he would set it to? It isn't rocket surgery - even I can set a car up based on the tyre wear patterns.

jbee - seriously, your better off importing from tirerack.

edit: does Tassie still have all those crap course-chip roads? They will make any tyre/car noisy.

even yokohama mention in their pdf, from the link above, that the min. rim size required for 235/40/18 is an 8" rim.
the rs neptunes r 7.5".

i know its been discussed many times in previous discussion - but this keeps reinforcing me not to get 235/40 for my rims!
though i want it, for obvious reasons.

225/40 x 18 is listed on the size chart on the Yokohama site.
I'm interested in these. I was going to go to Michelins when my Dunlops wear out but I may have another look and a talk with my tyre guy.
