You're lucky that you get a choice. When we were looking my wife said a loud NO to a wagon, as we had come off three earlier wagons - now the kids are older, she reckoned there was no need. The other stipulation was that we not repeat the same colour as on any of our earlier cars!
I really like the practicality of the liftback - it has the size of a boot, but the convenience of a hatchback. To test it out, Colin let us take a car home for an evening. We picked up two friends, who are both 6 feet tall, and loaded our two largest suitcases in the back. No problems at all, with room to spare.
An added advantage of not having a wagon is that I'm not tempted to load anything in the back on my inevitable weekly trip to Bunnings. I just take the trailer instead which keeps the mess out of my nice car.
Having said all of that, I like the look of the Scout. We've been doing a fair bit of camping, and its amazing how much two people take (neither of us wants to leave the coffee machine behind). There are so many wagons around - which I always point out to my wife - and I think she is now more comfortable with the idea. Maybe next time...

SNAP! I got my licence in the RT104 as well.
As a car, in context of the era, they weren't shocking. Toyota sold plenty of them, despite the 2.0L truck engine they had. I do remember going through a big dip doing ~140kmh once & the suspension bottomed & a huge puff of smoke came out the rear. Also sliding through a greasy intersection in the wet with all the brakes locked up. Goodyear Supersteels IIRC. I was banned from driving the family car shortly after that
The Bright Brown paint was pretty special - depending on the sun, it changed from dark red to brown. He also had Celica rims on it & that made it look quite different.
But as I said, people that mistook it for a Mercedes..... no clue.

I just came home with a 520 ltr 2nd hand fridge. It was huge. I didn't by a wagon for that but nice to be able to fit these things in.
