Used Scout - what to check?

Looking at a 2008 Scout. 52,000km. Out of warranty $25,000.

They have a service at 60,000km. That's not a terribly big one is it (not a timing belt one)? I can't think of any glaring faults on these engines, but I'm not overly familiar with them.

What do you think of the price?

Actually the 60k is a big one, it used to be around $800 but last I asked suddenly it was nearer $900. Also depending on what engine is in it, at 4 yrs the timing belt is replaced for about another $1200 so you are looking at around 2K....

There probably isn't anything wrong with it, thats actually routine and the most expensive service you get every 4 yrs.

Saw this on Carsales. Looked pretty cheap for a Scout I thought, bearing in mind what the 'minor' scratches turn out to really be.

The 60,000 km service is a major and not cheap if you go through a dealer. May well be a timing belt replacement too depending on the engine. If you search the forum you'll probably be able to work it out, otherwise talk to a dealer.

You can use the upcoming cost as a bargaining point, though the owner may argue it is cheap in recognition of that.

Good luck with it if you do go ahead - the Scout is a good car.

Love the way they advertise the towing capacity and it has no tow bar.
I'm pretty sure that the cam belt is supposed to be changed at 4 years/60,000km on those diesel engines.

Agree witht he cam belt - 4yrs/60k change, whichever occurs first. Might use this to pressure the wife into an early upgrade!

As to particular things to look for apart from the normal I'd be checking for underbody damage as an indication of how hard it may have been used.

It hasn't had that service so that's close to $2000. They bought it as a demo (probably mid 30k's?). Has had dogs in it that's what the scratches are from. So with transfer costs and the service that's around $28,000.

New ones are on Carsales for $39000.

So if you are still interested, let the bargaining begin... I'd certainly be suggesting that since you can get a new one drive away for $39k before any bargaining that 52k, no warranty, some wear and tear and an expensive service are worth a discount. There are also 1 or 2 demo's that are less, so you could conceivably get into the low 30's drive away with luck.

A new car also currently comes with a 5 year warranty and has updated styling and a newer model engine.

I've queried it several times and asked Skoda HQ, Skoda are more conservative and despite it saying just an inspection at 4yrs/90k, by the time they get in there, they figure they may as well replace it. I've had the same universal answer each time. Where did you get your interval time from?
