my wife had a Mondeo Titaneum Diesel a few years back (2011??). And it didn't meet expectations at the time. It had a lot of kit but none of it was actually useful (eg: shortest distance we could achieve to the car in front with ACC was about 75m - so cars kept cutting in front of us).
I think if I was looking in that space I'd consider one of the Mondeo or Focus XR5s. They probably don't align with your fuel consumption goals though.
