Aztech I am not one to calculate fuel consumption to the nth degree. I could probably look back on the records as to what exactly has been spent on fuel for the past few years as it has been a company car with a fuel card, and everything is recorded. But look, I filled her up with 95RON every 700 km , it has a - what - 55 litre tank? They are a VERY economical car to run fuel wise, especially in view of the performance you have - which is very good. Besides, fuel is only one (albeit important) factor in running costs, depreciation is probably the more important cost factor and if you buy in this year range the vehicle already is well depreciated so you probably get good value for money. But also, as the saying goes, remember to fill up the oil when you check the petrol.

Nice thanks, I guess thats a better way of calculating it rather than using the MDF. I guess for me as I'm looking specifically to keeping my expenses down and will be driving up to 2000k's a week its something I need to really look at closely. I think with that much driving I'll depreciate whatever I purchase, and as you say it's already taken a massive dive in the first few years. But thanks for that really swaying me towards the 1.8.

Though mine wasn't a vRS just a humble entry level, I never got near an average consumption of 10; more like 7-8 around town with lots of hills and 5-6 out of town depending on speed and load. Others have done better than this.

I suspect the car either had a lot of heavy traffic/very hilly driving or, yes, it has been flogged. Just possible also that if the trip was recently reset you can get initial readings that are not representative until more K's are covered.

There's a recent thread (diesel section) about a member's new car having poor consumption and a range of diesel owners gave theirs for comparison. This might be instructive.

Be aware too that the Titanium has 18 inch wheels that according to some ruin the ride. Good idea to compare the Sport with the Titanium if test driving.

my wife had a Mondeo Titaneum Diesel a few years back (2011??). And it didn't meet expectations at the time. It had a lot of kit but none of it was actually useful (eg: shortest distance we could achieve to the car in front with ACC was about 75m - so cars kept cutting in front of us).

I think if I was looking in that space I'd consider one of the Mondeo or Focus XR5s. They probably don't align with your fuel consumption goals though.

Nice, so just got back from test driving the vRS diesel, got to say I loved it really smooth, bit noisier than I'm use to in petrol engines when you put your foot down but don't mind that at all.

I pulled up and had a flick through the MFD and the fuel consumption figures when you change it to "2" (which I assume works the same as in the VWs, as in its an average of the last 1000 or so k's) was showing an average of 10L/100km. As the claimed combined figures are 6L/100 I was expecting around the 7-8 mark at the most.

Is this normal or does this guy flog it all the time?

My old 90TSI had claimed figures of 6.4 I think and I never had an average over high 7s and that was when I cained it.

Afterdarker do you have to 2.0 petrol? If so what sort of averages are you getting?

AVG 2 is for up to the last 99 hours then it resets to zero. 99hours usually works out around 3500-4500km for me but could be a lot less for others (eg: my wife would only do 2000-2500km as she drives in the inner-city all the time).

If you'r early in the 99 hours & the car has done lots of short trips or copped a flogging then it could easily be quite high. If you're somewhere beyond 50 hours then the consumption should be somewhere near the actual long term expectations.

You really need to know what the TIME 2 & AVG SPEED 2 figures are to get the full picture

EDIT: Mine uses almost no oil - I never have to top up between services (7500km). Maybe because it's a pre-fl BZB EA888 and in late 2008 they went to a different model code block

Thanks for all your input guys, so ended up buying a petrol Octavia RS Hatch with 50k on the clock. Can't wait to take delivery

Test drove several cars and couldn't beat this for what I was getting for the price. I did enjoy the way the focus drove but being a bigger guy I found the drivers seat really cramped.

Well petrol is at its lowest price for 6 years so with your high mileage this is going to keep you happy. But as others have said at 100,000 k a year you would want to go diesel? - but just read your latest post and welcome to the family! Really they are very fuel efficient and in fact I think they have won a few awards in the UK and Australia for low fuel consumption. But with the RS you will have to keep it in Economy mode!

I guess if the petrol RS is cheaper than the diesel equivalent then that pays for a lot of fuel. If he's doing 100,000km/yr then initial purchase price is important because the vehicle will almost be a throw-away in 2 years time
