    Used Octavia hatch 2009-2011 opionions

    Hi Guys,

Okay so I'm in the market for a second car that's better on juice than my stage 1 147TSI Tiguan.

I think I've narrowed it down to either the 1.8 petrol or the 2.0 diesel Octavia.

Any opinions on which one to go for? Do the official fuel figures come close to real world consumption? I'm thinking the 1.8 is probably more fun to drive but uses more fuel, but factoring in servicing would the diesels cost similar in the long run?

My Tiguan states 8.8 L/100k combined but even trying my best I sit at about 11. Highway driving from Sydney to Brisbane saw about 8.9 (pre-ECU upgrade) and that was on cruise control the whole way so I'm not very confident with VAGs official figures.

Also I wouldn't rule out the 2.0 petrol RS if the reduction in body weight over the Tiguan means much better fuel economy as I do love the engine, especially with a tune.

    Thanks,
    Aztech

    I have a 2007 build 1.8tsi manual hatch. It's done 150,000km with a Bluefin tune since 32,000km.

80% of my driving is motorway between inner ring Sydeney to the Outer South West
Average consumption pre-Bluefin on 98ron was 6.6L/100km but it took 10,000km to run-in.
Average consumption post-Bluefin has been 6.7L/100km.
Worst consumption from an individual fill has been 7.9 but it would only get 7+L/100km about 30% of fills.

All of this is proper measurements, not from the MFD.

I have mates with the 147tsi and their consumption isn't much different to mine.

I'd assume the Tiguan sucks more juice because:
    *AWD
    *Aerodynamics
    *Weight

Driving style does contribute. My wife uses about 20% more fuel than I do.

You don't actually say what stage1 tune you have, what fuel you run, tyre pressures, tyre type, etc...

I'm not sure how many km you do per year but at 25,000km/pa an extra 2L/100 consumption on 98ron @ $1.50/L is only $750/pa. It's hardly worth worrying about.

    Thanks for that Brad.

I have a custom-code stage 1 tune on the tiguan, but my figures seem to be similar to other owners of the 2.0T tiguans, in general I think the tigs chew a bit as do most small SUVs. As far as the other figures go, I'm 90% city driving, 18x7.5 wheels at 35PSI, always 98 octane.

I will be using this for work and driving heavily, around 1500-2000 per week. That's why fuel consumption is so important, basically if I can save 4+ L/100k it will pay for the repayments and I don't have to drive the tig into the ground.

So even at your worst figures with your 1.8 I would be happy. From my research those engines tune up real nice with a stage 1 as well

Go the diesel, then tune it. Stage 2 diesel is as much fun as (probably) a stage 1.5 petrol and uses half the fuel when 'fanging it'
2012 Octavia vRS TDI. Darkside big turbo, 3bar tune, other stuff. 200kW/650Nm.
    1990 Mk1 Cabrio. 1.9 IDI w/ 18PSI.
    1985 Mazda T3500 adventuremobile. 1973 Superbug. 1972 Volvo 144 in poo-brown.
    Not including hers...

I was thinking that, would be nice to not have to try to get good fuel consumption, just drive how you want.

I have a lead on a 2010 VRS Diesel with 108K on the clock that I could buy privately for around $15K which seems like a good deal. Mind you I can get a 1.8T for around 11-12K so need to weigh up if the extra is worth it. Of course the VRS gets a few other goodies like sat nav, partial leather seats, sports suspension etc so might be worth the extra.

For that type of mileage, i'd look at a diesel.

For a company drive, doing mods seems a bit odd. You just drive the crapper out of them. buy the model that's the minimum spec level you can put up with that has cheap size tyres, etc.

The 1.8's I can get do have lower miles, around 60-80 I've seen, I hear what you saying about going base level but at the end of the day I'm still driving it all day everyday so I still like a nice drive. I was mainly looking at the VRS as the one I found was priced similarly to other diesels I've seen. Not sure about the multi-coloured seats though, they look awful in photos but maybe they're better in person, also the white sections might be a nightmare to keep clean.

You do a lot of driving, but is it mainly start-stop or longer trips?

For my 2010 1.8 TSI auto (edit: wagon), the long-term fuel consumption (real world, NOT trip meter) is under 7.3 l/100 km, and I probably do less than half my driving on the freeway.

For 2010 and earlier, satnav etc was an option on these and I think it was standard for 2011-onwards (just look for the column of 4 buttons down either side of the display for the stereo).

The "white" sections r not hard to keep clean. Tis been 4 yrs + 2 kids under 5 yrs old, n it still looks like it did when i drove it off the showroom floor.

Speaking of fuel consumption - we mostly do suburban driving and spirited driving on the weekends and the trip computer shows an avg consumption of 7.9L/100. I don't know how accurate it is.

But yeah....u do alot of kms - get a diesel.

    + 1

If you are doing high km's with highway driving, the diesel comes into its own.

    1. Highway driving for me with family and luggage ~ 5L/100km stop start around town ~6.5
    2. Highway driving with a diesel with the torque, brilliant for overtaking
    3. Servicing on the diesel is not as high as some people think

Tuning, well as Mysticality says it is as much fun as a petrol, and a good diesel tune I think is better than a petrol. Different driving style as you dont rev out, but short shift on the torque curve.
