Tyre advise

Hi All,

On the way to work this morning my front right tyre ran over a fair size rock on the highway (wonder who left a rock laying around on the highway??), the car still steers fine but made a louder noise on the highway. Upon inspection, the tyre has a noticeable bulge on the sidewall. Looks like I'm going to need to replace the tyre .

Questions, is it ok to replace just the damaged tyre? or will I be better off getting 4 brand new tyres? They are 18 inch Conti CSC2 and have done about 20k KM.

Anyone know a well-priced source for this tyre?

Has anyone tried a different tyre brand and your thought in comparison with the Conti?

A guy at my work recently had a similar scenario with his 8 month old Golf R Mk7. One of his tyres developed a bubble (due to under inflation) and then the tyre developed a wobble etc. Diagnosis was that he needed to replace the tyre.

He could not find the same type of tyre that was currently fitted to the vehicle (Continental's i believe they were) so he had to get a Michelin. So now he has 3x original tyres (which have travelled around 12,000km) and 1x new Michelin. The Michelin is on the rear of the car.

No issues with this setup apart from the fact that my OCD would go crazy having a mis-matched tyre.....although 99% of people wouldn't care (actually, 99% of people probably have mis-matched tyres on their cars now).

Bulged sidewall = unrepairable.

If the other tyre is less than half worn (>5mm tread) then you can get away with one but you'll need to put the rears to the front & the new + worn tyre on the rear.

Otherwise 2x new tyres (fit to rear).

CSC2 have a very soft sidewall. IIRC it's only 2 ply (others have more). It's one of the reasons CSC2 weigh about 1kg less than the other brands.

I like Michelin tyres - esp the PS3.

The Goodyear Efficient Grip gets good reviews as well

I have a single 225/40/18 tyre. Will check brand when I get home tonight if you want (I think it's a hankook). It's not very old as I got a puncture with about 5000km left to go on my old tyres so just bought the new single one from the tyre place to get me through until my new rims and tyres arrived. So it's only about 5000km old.....maybe 7500km tops.

What part of Qld are you in?

I would go insane with mismatched tyres.

Be aware it will affect handling when you are getting up it.

Like Brad re mismatched tyres. I'm uncomfortable enough with PS3 on the rear and original Dunlop Fast something or other on the front only because a large screw through a side wall just happened on one of those months when just about every other annual bill is due. Odd tyres are for spare wheel well only IMO. (I wanted away from the Dunlop but couldn't quite justify replacing all four at 18000 KMS!)

It looks like all my tyres are worn more than I expected, so I end up replacing two with a matching one, as per brad, fitted them to the rear. Will need to replace the other two in due course.

The louder than normal tyre roar still persist, it's a little bit better with the not-damaged tyre. 0-50km/h sounded normal, the roaring noise and humming increases quite considerably thereafter. Do you think something is off with the suspension? Still steer as good as before. Any ideas??
