I'm an engineer
The following is copied from the Briskoda forum and is for a pdf file found on the VW site and is just a brilliant document.

Not only does it give the best visual description of the fuel consumption tests it also gives detailed background info on the 1.4tsi fuel consumption and all associated factors.
The VAG groups should publish this info for all their vehicles.
As far as I can see the steady state consumption for each gear corresponds almost exactly to what I have experienced in my manual 1.4tsi Octavia.
The only 'fact' that I would contest in the document is the claim that running the A/C at too low a temperature risks giving the occupants a cold. Obviously engineers do not relate to biology so well

Germans & Austrians have a fundamental fear of drafts / cold breezes unless they are moving. My wife & her parents (1x Bavarian, 1x Austrian - I won't comment on what other Germans think of these two areas) are always shutting windows if there's a bit of a breeze & they are sitting down / inactive.
My wife would close all the bedroom windows every night for fear of "catching a chill". That's fine in winter but during the humid summer nights I have basically told her to leave the windows open or go & sleep on the lounge. No chill evident after 30 years.
They couldn't show that brochure to Aussies - it condones travelling at 160kph. We'd all die! (according to Roadsafe Australia et al)

I used to think I was anal-retentive until I started getting involved in car forums

There used to be some good official VW videos on YouTube - I can't find them but maybe somebody else will. They were German, not USA based
