Trade in Skoda Mk2 RS125i TDI 2012 37k mileage

Hi Guys,

Just want to ask who recently traded in their car? What is the general consensus about selling them privately?

Skoda makes great cars but it's so difficult to get even a bite on the car. People are scared of Skoda?

Whats the most recent trade in value for those that recent traded in? PM me if you let me know please.

Trade in will be crap always. We sold ours privately, and in the end it went to a family member before we even got to carsales so went pretty quickly. Awareness is growing so you just need to get it out there. There also seems to be either people selling them too high, but also a perception you can't get much for them. Redbook is entirely useless for values as they don't see the majority of sales. Have a look what others are going for. One issue you have is that it's a diesel which is implicated in the whole diesel saga and people may be staying away from it for that reason. Most wouldn't realise Skoda are also involved in it though.

The diesel RS was always a bit of a strange combination. I think you'll find that they sold 10 petrol a to 1 diesel RS.

It's a small market so it will probably take a while to find the right buyer.

Australia wasn't really ready for a performance diesel.
I think this is why we don't get the Golf GTD either. It came for a short time at the end of Mk6 but hasn't been continued.

Having just bought a Diesel Octavia Wagon (1Z) recently, I can confirm there are very few on the market, and I'd expect that its fewer people that actually want one. I saw heaps of smaller petrol engines, a couple of RS petrol, and maybe about 3 diesel.

My friends aren't aware Skoda has been available in its current guise for that long, and a few people expressed concern that they didn't want to take a punt on them as they're somewhat uncommon. Your best bet is likely a fair amount of patience and waiting for someone like a fellow forum member to show interest, I don't think you'll do that well in trade-ins.

Traded my 2011 RS (TSI DSG) wagon with 70k km on the odo, due a service and 6 weeks rego remaining, in May this year. Got just over 30% of what I paid for it.

By way of comparison, the missus got about 40% when she traded her 3 year old A1 mid last year, so not that much better (but I think the A1 sits in an awkward market segment).

So yeah, trade-in values are rubbish, but you have to weigh it against having to sell privately - waiting on calls, doing test drives, and you still need to keep it registered and insured while you sit and wait for it to sell. If it was a Camry or Forester, then I definitely would have tried selling privately; a Skoda is a different proposition entirely...

If you trade in on another Skoda, you ll probably do better. When I traded in my 09 RS TSI Wagon on my current 14 TDi Wagon I got $20 k back,it was immaculate though. Mazda offered $12 k on a 6 wagon.

Tradeins are a bit of a red herring, it's not always what you got, but rather what they can afford to borrow from one to give the other. And whether they think they can resell it quickly. Dealers in general hate odd brands, so not surprised. Hyundai gave me dirt (11k) for a very popular Mazda 6 with low kms and immaculate that was 5yrs old. Because it was manual and they knew it would be hard to sell. Mazda meanwhile were after that kind of car. I got 15k trade in and a price I'll never get again on our 2008 RS with a Mazda 323 that was worth 20k less than the 6 was and was 6 yrs old. But they knew they could sell it fast as it was a rare but sought after variant, and it was gone a week later.

Wagons seem to be more popular with Octavias and the RS the most popular of all, especially with the waiting times and the scarcity of them. But the diesel will scare off people.

You will, but then you will also have the same problem when you try to sell the new Skoda you bought 4/5 years down the track.

Best bet with lesser known / unpopular brands / models is to buy demo/second hand to reduce the loss when you sell. If I had bought my MY12 new, I'd be crying right now looking at the trade prices, but I intend to keep mine for a long time, so it's not so much of a concern. A $7-10k loss on a car over 5+ years is acceptable to me.

Trade in will always be terrible. My RS is even rarer in that it is a manual. You cant buy that configuration anymore either, so I wont be getting rid of it in a hurry. Even for a newer model as I cant get the same again. I may consider over $50k if I was offered it, but wouldnt sell for under $50k.

A car is worth what people will pay for it not what a dealer or redbook says. Your market is small with a diesel RS as people dont get performance diesels in Australia. Those that do, love them.

My first car was a manual V6 commodore and I looked for over 6 months to find one. Paid way more than an auto and when I sold it (privately), I found someone who wanted a manual and got more than the auto's on resale.

As Fred said, your best market will be a forum member or similar that knows the brand and wants a diesel.

You may be waiting a very long time for someone to pay you $50k for your car .. just saying
