As it happens I've had a few experiences of people standing next to my RS while the engine was running, and them not realising that it was an oil burner until I told them. And for what it's worth, when I drive Sydney/Melbourne without having to stop for fuel I don't hear any tractor noise. What I hear is CA CHING!!!
Yes, my TDI has the shielding.
Well, I’m also quite proud to have a “tractor” motor / oil burner and it was a very definite choice based mostly on the drivability and not far second the awesome economy.Quote:

The performance specs of some of the old muscle cars are laughable compared to a modern diesel! I owned a warm 253 trimatic in a GTS copy and as much a I loved the sound of the twin system, it sucked fuel like it was going out of fashion...
I had a 2007 CDTI Astra before the Skoda and the diesel clatter was much louder inside and outside that car. I am interested in finding out why my Sept 09 build does not have the bonnet covering though.

The stock HZ 253 is listed as 120 kw/325Nm - so a bit less than the 125/350 TDI. 0-100 in only 12.9 sec ...... but yes, you still cannot beat that V8 note (or beat). Even thought the body on the octy is much smaller the functional cabin space would not be much less. I must say even though I am a little hard of hearing I can't hear much exhaust note or engine nosie at all (unless you are trying to get that sub 9 sec 0-100). ...... saw a whistle on ebay to put into the exhaust to give it more "turbo" whine :facepalm:..............Quote:

is it easily removable?
i can't bear to imagine how hot it would b in the engine bay with that thing in summer!!!!
it would b great in winter though - help the car warm up faster.
Those little black plastic clips, just squeeze and pull out!
I'll remove it and leave it off for a few days to see if there's any difference.

The only thing that should change if you take it out is the noise level. These days engine temp is controlled by a quite sophisticated engine management computer and the cooling system (thermostat, coolant, and air flow). Fans provide airflow at low speed or at idle, but over 30-35 kph are useless, which is why they are now mostly electro thermostatic. Once you get over about 30-35 kph, the airflow due to the motion of the car is greater than the air being supplied from the pitch of the blades, so old belt driven fans are mostly costing horsepower by wasting fuel to drive a noisy fan that isn't doing any cooling.Quote:
