I thought you could as long as they are in mp3 format. You certainly can't 'rip' from a music cd. You should also be able to burn mp3's to a DVD (I'm sure it's possible on the RNS510).

I've never actually tried it, so I could be wrong.

I loaded stuff using Itunes and found that "mix" didnt work so well It would shuffle through each Cd at a time and not random tunes as in different artists.
What I have done after formatting the HDD is pick individual tunes and put them in the root directory of the SD card, like 5,500 of them.

It then loads into the HDD like it is one huge album and shuffles within the whole folder as it should.

A bit time consuming but a far better result. It took over an hour to load them all.

Depending what BT module you have yes it should.

The HDD is there and in most cases has more space than on a phone to store music, but each to their own.

I use a combination of the HDD (upgraded to 64GB SSD) a 32GB SDHC card in the slot and BT streaming.
In my case I have albums and kids music on the HDD, dance music on the SD card, and audiobooks/internet radio from the phone.

according the columbus user manual - u can copy music (mp3 & wma files) from the cd directly to the hdd.
as jords said - u can't "rip" an audio cd.
pg 27 of the manual (not the octavia manual) explains it all in detail.

Saving 100 music titles of average length of time (3 - 5 minutes) will take approximately 40 minutes.

I've worked out that from the SD card (Class-10) it runs at about 5MB/s.

For those who don't know what that means, its the speed at which data moves across. The same way Litres/HR or KW/h work.

To work out how long the transfer of music is going to take - so that you can plan ahead - open up the SD card in Windows Explorer, select all the music on there (files/folders), right click and select "Properties"
Then you'll have the size of everything. Example: 4.93GB.
To work out approximately how long, get the total size (If >1GB/1,024MB) and times by 1,024. Then divide by 5, then by 60.

    So, in this example:
    4.93 x 1,024 = 5,048.32
    5,048.32 / 5 = 1,009.66
    1,009.66 / 60 = 16.82
= About 17min total transfer time for 4.93GB data.

If your total data size is <1GB/1,024MB - example: 473MB, then follow these steps to calculate how long its going to take:
    473 / 5 = 94.6
    94.6 / 60 = 1.57
= About 90sec total transfer time for 473MB data.

Just a little lifehack I worked out.
Remember - you can't turn your Columbus unit off until its finished transferring!... Else you'll have to start it all over again. I found this out the hard way. :S

Actually it does remember where it left off in a way...it skips tranfer for existing tracks however its pretty slow. Not as slow as copying it all again but slow nontheless.
I've found the best way to bulk transfer is do it in batches. Either load up a big sdcard and only copy a folder at a time or use a smaller card and do multiple file dumps over multiple car trips.

Also when moving mp3 file from a Windows environment, best to have "show hidden files" enabled on your laptop/desktop.

That is so you can delete all those hidden files that sometimes come with mp3 files, album art, thumbs.db etc. off your SD card before you put them into your Columbus Nav.

Otherwise the Columbus will copy those files and they will be visible on your system if you don't delete them first.

On my Bolero I had that problem what it seemed to do was play the whole of an album before it started mixing. I read somewhere that that is normal in computer terms it plays a whole directory (album in this case) before it goes random. What I did was put a 30 second track in the root directory and I start with that. It plays the track then starts "mixing" it does seem to always pick two tracks from an album before it moves to another random album but I can put up with that.

ok, so I have loaded a huge amount of music from I tunes to a SD card now.
It plays when installed into a computer etc, so I must have loaded it all correctly.

BUT when I install it into my Columbus, it doesnt recognise the SD card.

    What am I doing wrong?
