Skoda vs Mazda etc resale (depreciation)

    From

Carpoint's review of Mazda6, Honda Accord, Ford Mondeo, and Skoda Octavia
it shows that the estimated resale after 3 years is not that different. 61% for Mazda6 (best in class) vs 56% for Skoda (approx equal to Mondeo).

So, about $2k-3k over 3 years. Makes me feel that if I can get the cost of a Skoda RS with some accessories close to a Mazda6 then I am not going to be financially too far off.

Also, Mazda are likewise cursed with high servicing costs!

Given the affects of the GFC on the new and used car markets, I don't think any current estimates of depreciation over the next 12 months will be very accurate, let alone for 3 years hence. Plus Skoda is still very much an umknown quantity in Oz.

Drive them both, then buy the one you like the most, that way at least you'll enjoy your driving

Driver in me likes the Skoda RS

I drove the Mazda6 last week. Nice car, but some things were annoying even on a test drive. Red LED (climate control?) display shrunk down to the size of a 1st generation LED watch (Sinclair). Unreadable unless under 25 with perfect vision. Hand brake located next to passenger seat not driver's seat, a good 150 mm away from a convenient spot (obviously built for US market- surprising as usually Japanese are good on details like this as they also drive on the "right" side, that is the left-hand side of the road). Would not be so bad except diesel is not available in auto, so would have to use handbrake quite often for hill starts. And it was VERY awkward to use.

So I think I am in the process of convincing myself successfully to spend lots of $ on a new car! Probably a Škoda RS! (have read lots more +ve reviews on whatcar.com)

I own a fairly new 6, and was not really interested in another....as the new model was barely anything different...got an RS for not much more...and at the time the resale was higher than the 6. I'd say the 6 will be more expensive with servicing though as it needs twice the services when I only drive 15k a year.

oh your like me, looking for the best diesel in that segment, except I brought my RS 2 months ago, and as the 6 diesel still wasn't out, made my decision easy which I'm actually thankful, because would of drawn out the whole process, though Im still a little curious how the M6 handles.

DSG is cool , having D mode, sport, and the triptronic.
though in the pursuit for the ultimate performance/economy ratio, I find myself using the triptronic more and more.

I've got no opinion on depreciation, though I can confirm you will get far more attention with the Skoda than the Mazda, ok might be more like "wtf is a skoda?" type of attention, but attention none the less

I dont really trust those redbook type guides. They can be way off.

I do think that it will be harder to sell a Skoda privately in 3 years time vs the Mazda though. You might get an ok price for it but it wont be as easy to move.

You would have to pay me $25 a day to drive a Mazda - Give me my RS Occy any day.

Keep it for 5 to 10 years and you don't have to be worry about the resale value.
