i've got an 09 vRS 125TDi DSG.
prob with mine is the backs are buggered.
Heaps of tread left but their scolloped.
put them on the front now after 22000kms, rough and noisy ride with scolloped tyres up front, but heaps of tread on them so im gunna hammer them for another 8000kms then put some new ones on before end of financial year.
even though my cars 95% work use, i wont be popping $500 a tyre.
I may go for a 235/40/18 instead which will increase rolling diameter marginally but choice of tyre and pricing should be cheaper due to it being a more common size.
Those Dunlops are the problem more than anything, lots of people find they suck with tyre wear. I've got the Michelin PE2s and they are perfect after 30,000kms so far, tonnes of tread left and have been a grippy tyre. I have just had the first wheel balance and alignment at 2yrs/30k since new as well.
They sadly don't exist anymore though, but have been replaced by the PS3s which I have put on my 6 for $200/tyre, in the same size for the RS they are $440......mainly as they are just getting that size in this month.
My tyre dealer had them about 6 weeks ago. I wanted SWMBO to put them on the Audi ($415 each I was quoted) but she's always been a Bridgestone fan so she ended up with RE050's at $496.00 each. I'll be going the PS3 route when needed my guy gave them a good wrap and he's never been wrong yet.

My brain was a bit out of date, it was late Oct when they were coming. We scored a decent camera from Michelin to boot that I sold for $150 so not bad. I'm happy to go the PS3s for the Skoda, they have been good on the 6 in their short life there so far.
I've got PS3s on my R26, and they are fine. No problems so far.
Before that I had PP2s, and Before that SP2s.
Michelin make a good tyre.
Agree with the above. I'm not a fan of Dunlop Sportmax.
michelin PS2 if you like to drive fast; PS3 if you like to drive almost as fast
The assymetric Pirelli P-Zero (only released last year) is worth a look too
I have Michelin Premacy HP on my more touring focussed non-vRS Octy & they suit it perfectly.

Hello all,
Sorry to bring up an old thread but I was wondering if anyone knows if you can mix tyre brands?
I hit a pothole and have ruined a near new Dunlop SP Sport Maxx (less than 8000 kms).
I'm not near a major city at the moment and I will likely be limited on options when I ring around the shops after the public holiday.
The question is - if the shop has another brand (such as Michelin, Conti etc) in the right size can I use it?
Considering the 225/40/18's are so expensive I would be loath to change it again until the OEM Dunlops are buggered...
Also a warning to those using an RS for driving holidays... Pay attention to potholes!
At even low speeds the 40 section tyres can't take much punishment and using the standard spare tyre which is speed limited to 80kph is painful!!!
Over the last two days I have been abused twice for keeping to 80 kph
Cheers and thanks in advance for your advice.
As I understand things you are supposed to have matching tyres on any axle. You can have say Pirelli's on the back and Michelins on the front but you can't have a Michelin and a Pirelli on the front.
You should probably check with the Queensland Transport Authority or at least ring one of the large chain store type tyre places they should know the rules.
If you have to buy two tyres you could always try to sell one Dunlop on the auction site assuming it still has a reasonable amount of tread. There may be somebody else in the same position as you.

Thanks I suspected that was the case.
To compound the issue according to the Dunlop website they no longer sell the SP Sport Maxx in Aus....
