Geez, that's a lot. What happened to the original key?
Just had a quote for a replacement key for an Octavia III. $680 plus an encoding fee. Any thoughts on the cost or ways to circumvent this?

So a blank from Ebay and coding with VCDS will do the trick? VCDS has the capability to pair keys and tie to a VIN or whatever they link a key to? If so it is worth buying VCDS given the saving to be had.

Anyone know of a good gps keyring? I have not seen any that inspire confidence. I suppose some of the kid locator devices might suffice. The bluetooth ones have such limited range.
... $680, yikes. Doesn't sound right to me. 'Why is that' you ask? Because I'm currently in the process of getting 2 new keys made as we speak. Yep i lost them both, not awesome, though mine are for an octy ii. Is this price a dealership quote or a locksmith business? I was hesitant at first about contacting Audi (that's who deals with skoda in my hood in NSW) and so i got a business to come and do it in the driveway. Mistake! Half wits thinking they know it all ****ed around for a few days and flattened my battery.....anyways. Ended up getting a quote from Audi for $488, keys supplied and coded at the dealership. Much easier for vw, audi or whatever to access the data and such for programming the keys (maybe half hour job) than having some ****ers screw you around while they have to backwards engineer the process and take up a bunch of time. Audi keys are $500 a piece, skoda two for the price of one...bargain...

Yeah ok. Mine was dealer direct also, perhaps the octy iii keys are a league above. Maybe I'll enquire about your key when i get mine done on tuesday, for interest sake. Keep us posted.

Kessy. As I now understand it breaks down as follows.
The flip out key itself needs to be cut to match cars existing locks.
The metal key also had a transponder in it that needs to be set for the car.
Then you have the fob part with buttons that also needs to match car. They come in several types so the new one needs to match the old one. Otherwise one will work and one won't. Car can be set via VCDS etc to accept key fob variations.
I might have some of this wrong, still reading up, so any corrections are welcome.
