Custom vs off the shelf free-flow exhausts

It obviously depends on what you want in terms of cost, appearance, sound and performance. I've never bought an off the shelf performance exhaust, and I never will. Instead I'd rather get exactly what I want, and what is actually needed, and in the process save a huge amount of money*.

*My last exhaust modification (a new rear muffler fitted to my diesel Roomster) cost me $40 total. It gave the desired outcome in terms of flow, noise and appearance. (It's also a stainless muffler that will last forever.)

To anyone considering a new exhaust who reads this thread: I'd be very wary of people who state that an off the shelf exhaust is the only way to sensibly go. It isn't.

I have to agree, even if you don't have any experience with cars and have an exhaust shop that is willing to let you work with them on look and sound, the system will generally be less than 1/2 the cost. But in saying that, my last exhaust was a end to end tig welded 3 inch mandrel bent system that weighed 1/3 the original system and was stainless on a highly modified 2003 Mini Cooper S. I had seen and heard three or four after market systems on fellow mini owners cars and worked with my local exhaust shop who made up a fantastic system which then went on to be made for about 5 other cars at the time.

I guess it really depends if you talk to the right guy at the shop.

At least explore it, as you may come out with a far better sound and performance than off the shelf kit.

And Vendors jumping into Non vendor threads pushing kit is not appreciated.. There are Vendor threads a plenty in this site.. Might be a good idea for a moderator to have some words with vendors, and remove thread number#21 as its blatant advertising. ( my two cents worth)

I bought an off the shelf system based on cost and convenience and because when I had done so in the past I was very happy.

    So, a quick(ish) review:

It looks good and fitted perfectly - only difficulty is removing the old one which you'd have regardless of which exhaust you fitted. Its a metric s**tload lighter and a touch shorter than the original (~10mm), so it doesn't stick out as much and looks more "fitted", especially as the pipes are a bigger and fill the cutout nicely. Condom stuffed with walnuts I think is a fitting (pun intended) metaphor.

The car definitely has a bit more urge, mainly as it seems to rev a touch quicker. This was not what I bought the zorst for, but is a nice bonus.

Now, the sound is what I bought it for. At idle, from within the car, you wouldn't know it wasn't stock. Outside, you hear more of a low rumble, sounds more purposeful. Under about 2200rpm, its slightly louder than stock, but much deeper, ballsier. Around 2800rpm (under full throttle), its at its a touch boomy for my liking. About 3000rpm onwards it sounds the ducks guts, like it's tearing the tarmac open, without being too loud. Minty. Sings all the way to redline, with the exhaust combining with induction/engine at >4000rpm. In short? Sounds good.

I'm thinking of putting in some sound deadening to cut the boomy effect a bit - seems a common problem with the wagon and it had annoyed me in the past even when stock (mainly tyre noise). Anyone else suggest a solution that's worked for them? At 100km/h, its as quiet as stock. At no speed does it drone (thank Christ...). Burbles nicely off throttle going down a hill, odd pop on the overrun. Very nice.

Distributor service - Paul from Jetex Australia was very helpful and kept me informed to its shipping and whatnot. I cant comment on the other posts here - I'm calling it like it is with my impressions of the exhaust.

    So, in summary:

    Fitting/install- 5/5
Build quality - 5/5 (Swedish stainless steel, nicely polished, nice mandrel bends)
Looks - 4/5 (would've been nice if they had Jetex etched on top of the tips)
    Grunt - 4.5/5
    Sound - 4.5/5

    Verdict:
    Overall - 23/25
Would I buy it knowing what I know now? Yes - just don't you all go doing it, otherwise my unique car wont be so unique anymore!

I will hopefully have some pics and videos very soon.

There seems to be plenty of opinions in relation to this topic on exhausts – but I couldn’t resist saying this…I’m not a Vendor and to suggest that my comments #21 should be removed is absolutely absurd…(Mr ACT #23)
I SIMPLY POSTED A COPY OF AN EMAIL SENT TO ME YESTERDAY!
Thought fellow readers might find it useful and isn’t this what this forum is all about assisting the VAG community?

Plus comments about off the shelve exhaust are also absurd – Off the shelf means generic…there’s nothing generic about a system that has been engineered and made to perform for a specific car…that’s a performance exhaust that’s made for a specific car!

Off the shelve is just that Generic one size fits all and best of British with it on any car, that’s not and never was the comment.

If you drive a Skoda – you purchase a Skoda engineered performance exhaust – not fit an off the shelve muffler or any other part and expect it to perform… it won’t increase performance, it won’t add extra performance, it will do a generic job much like the factory muffler and look shiny, that’s ok & cool and any cheap auto shop has shelves of those products , if that’s you want, go for it!

So the copy email I posted was for quality products that are made to suit specific cars – Skoda included. My Golf was a mess with a so called muffler expert and if I kept it on my car – I would had major issues with my near new car! Again I thought readers should benefit from my experience.

So in closing – a Performance exhaust is not an off the shelve generic system – auto parts shops have those. And as I also mentioned yesterday, muffler shops do a great job with local made cars, because they are simple and don’t have special or sensitive electrical management solutions.

We drive European cars that are engineered to perform in certain way, they are almost all euro 5 standard in most cases and need a real performance exhaust, companies like Jetex spend thousands of dollars to develop vehicle specific performance exhausts, it’s really a no brainer!

I know which one I would spend my money on!...and I did just that, and as I said yesterday… IT’S AWESOME and recommend Jetex exhausts to anyone here!

Plus my Jetex system cost less than my Muffler shop system did anyway, so even the cost debate is a no brainer!

Performance Vehicle Specific Exhausts are the only way to go, I know I tried both. Merry Xmas

One locally made car is extremely sophisticated.... in fact, in driveline far more sophisticated than an Octavia RS. But as is the case with a lot of your argument, don't let mere facts get in the way!

Your Comment is Spot on! No Off the Shelf Generic System is classed or Sold as a Performance Exhaust System, Plus if your $40 muffler makes you happy ....than good for you! My Golf GTI cost me just shy of $50K and I wanted to tap into the Extra Power, I now have this Plus heaps more...My Jetex system is not off the Shelf Generic, it's a specific designed performance exhaust system made for my Golf...enjoy the holidays

Perhaps I should make it less open to interpretation?

I'd be very wary of people who suggest that buying a prebuilt performance exhaust, designed for a particular car, is always far better than getting a quality exhaust shop to make you a custom exhaust. Taking the whole range of issues into account (cost, noise, requirements, etc), that is simply not the case.

Buy the prebuilt exhaust by all means if you wish, but don't accept this trumpeted fallacy that taking that approach is always better.

(And I hate to niggle, but you didn't seem to respond to my point that a local, Australian built car has a far more sophisticated driveline than an Octavia RS, and, after all, we're all interested in getting facts right, aren't we? Thus the statement you made - "muffler shops do a great job with local made cars, because they are simple and don’t have special or sensitive electrical management solutions" is demonstrably wrong. At least one locally built car is extremely sophisticated in driveline.)

I think we're missing the forest for the trees. Off the shelf Jetex or custom made Joe's Exhausts, it's the result that counts. There's few guarantees either way and I took a roll of the dice by ordering an exhaust off the shelf unseen and unheard. It was well priced and convenient so I went for it. I'm extremely happy - the Jetex looks good, sounds awesome and gives more grunt. Custom made or off the shelf, i'd think that's what you'd be after, regardless of your car.

Incidentely, managed to take it for a squirt up Mt Dandenong today. The sound of the Blue Devil echoing through the forest and off the rock faces made it worth every cent - I don't think I'll be fiddling with sound deadening anymore...
