    Skoda new sponsor for GWS

Just saw on the news that Skoda are the new sponsor for the new Greater Western Sydney team in the AFL, as well as naming rights sponsor for their home ground.

About time Skoda did some serious advertising !

I can't see GWS or AFL supporters generally being high on the demographic of potential Skoda owners but I guess the marketing people know what they are doing. At least they are doing something and the name will get plenty of exposure on TV for 24 or 25 weeks each year.

Holy crap I didn't see this one coming! Wow! As KIWI said I'm not sure they appeal to the greater Western Sydney AFL demographic but it's a great start! When's GWS open?

I think having the name in AFL is more important than any percieved demographic. AFL is almost universal and classless in Vic and the Skoda name will be seen and heard all over AFL broadcasting. A great move and a great way to raise awareness.

I agree, I couldn't see the point in them sponsoring a rugby league team, but definitely can see middle income (of which there are a lot of in western sydney) giving the GWS club a chance. Don't think Skoda is only going to appeal to the latte sipping inner city set. In Sydney, lots of white collar workers commute from Western Sydney. (I'm one of them )

Edit: And getting the name out in an Australian wide sport... No one can complain about that!

Well its a welcome change from throwing money at "lycra wearing mobile speed humps". About time they put their advertising dollars main stream, although Western Sydney and AFL is a strange mix.

Okay so what are they going to call the ground?

    - Superb Stadium

    - Skoda Dome

    - Yeti Ground?

Anybody got any decent ideas that we could give to Skoda?

I've only ever been to 1 AFL match in my life (last year) and the people that I met in the corporate box i was in..... they were just middle-class/wife+2kids/mortgage/normal people. The friends that i know that are AFL fans - same deal.

I also have lots of mates that are into cycling & only a few of them are into AFL, so I think that Skoda sponsoring a new AFL team (so more publicity than a lot of the established teams) will be good to spread the word around. Especially as it's in Sydney, as Skoda doesn't seem to have had a big impact here, like it has in the ACT & Victoria.

I'm not sure what you guys think a Skoda owner is but I think I was one of the earlier buyers (July 2008 ) and i'm:

late 40's; tradie turned into a office bound para-professional; individual income < $100k; working wife(breadwinner) + 2 young kids; home owner; hobbies/interests: caring for my kids, cooking, gardening, fiddling with cars, house maintenance, mountainbikes, swimming, live theatre, food, running an internet car forum, playing computer war games, music, reading. I used to be right into motorsport (cars & motorbikes) but barely give it a thought these days; also an ex-small boat sailor/windsurfer.

Two of my internet mates have bought Skoda vRS wagons. One is a mortgage broker & is heavily into endurance karts; the other is an IT consultant & bought it for his wife + 2 kids. Like me, their previous rides were Subaru Liberty.

I used to think I was anal-retentive until I started getting involved in car forums
