The fun part about Red books and similar is that the only people who believe them are the punters. At least that was the case when I was in the trade in the USA, New Zealand and here in Australia.

And yet every car dealer I've dealt with the last few years use them to generate their used car trade in price. If you have a look on carsales etc, redbook tends to undervalue compared to whats going on in the market. That is for cars that have actually reached that age though. I wouldn't trust them for something thats not even around that long yet.

Check out retained values redbook ,as listed in this months top selling motoring magazine .

    So lets work this out.....
Octavia 1.8TSI M6 Elegance had a RRP of $30990 plus onroads. Lets assume the onroads are lost immediately (because I can't remember what they are worth & mine came with "free" onroads).

67.6% retained value after 3 years makes it $20990. Yeah, good luck I really can't see it. Sure you might trade-in for $16,000 and the dealer will put it on the lot for $20990 but in reality that means 52% retained value for the owner.

It would be nice to see what type of auction/private sale/trade-ins people are getting.

In most cases they are using the book to identify the model so that when they ring a wholesaler or another dealer who will buy that particular vehicle they are describing it correctly.
Vehicle valuations between dealers are done over the phone and provided a description from one party to another is correct the valuation will stand so lets say you take your Skoda into a Toyota dealer who has never seen one before he needs to be able to accurately identify the vehicle to whoever he is going to on sell it to so he knows where he stands when negotiating trade in prices and changeover deals. That is where the books are most often used in the trade. Obviously the Toyota dealer will look at the book value as a starting point but if he can only get, say 70% of book value from two or three potential trade buyers the 70% is what he will work on for calculation purposes every time.
The used car market is one of the only pure free trade markets there is. Every vehicle is worth exactly what somebody will pay for it no more, no less and book values are not relevant.

    October Vfacts figures

    Hi everyone,

Just a quick note to let you know that Skoda reported another 136 happy owners but i am unsure of the model mix. As an interesting side note they are the highest growth product (passenger cars) in the market, currently tracking at 42.2% growth for the year when most had either stayed still or gone backwards. It just edged out Hyundai who has also had massive growth at a flat 42%.

The blinder was from Izuzu they have come back into the market and have managed a monthly increase i sales of 786%. Although only new to the market they have advertised heavily on TV and although it is just a rodeo without the holden badges they have sold 4 times the amount of new vehicles Skoda have in October. Maybe we can learn from this?!

But overall we are growing, that;s a good sign

The Isuzu Rodeos have been sorely missed, what passes for them them now are fairly crap. Most people I know who had them moved to Nissan Navaras...

I'm still waiting to see another Roomster on the road. Owned mine for 4-5 months now - and only ever seen one other Roomster driving around.

Lots of people dont know what they are missing out on - as they fill the fuel tank (again and again) in the Mitsubishi Pajero which has no more luggage space!!

In all honesty, there is a huge fallacy about boot space in 4WD wagons, we had a patrols for years and they never had the space even our falcons before them did. And both our Mazda 6 and the Skoda have more room in the boot than Commodores do....well usuable room anyway from experience. I'm always amazed how many people think Foresters, X trails and even Tiguans and Cx-7s have more room than the normal standard car. They have height and thats about it. I cart huge boxes fo stuff in all kinda of hire cars, and I can fit an awful lot more in my two cars than most.

yes - the forester is pathetically small.

Recent Ikea trip in the Roomster:

    - 4 chests of drawers
    - TV cabinet
    - wall cabinet

    + 3 people.

And the car felt no different to drive - even with all of that weight! In my previous falcon I would have felt lighter steering and dragging rear end. I guess in the Roomster the weight sits in between the wheelbase.

Was also an uphill run home - Brisbane at sea level to Warwick at 500m. Yet it still returned less than 5L per 100km.
