A shortshifter is a great idea, and the price is great, but likely to reflect the quality of it.

I low price will be very quickly forgotten when you stuck in traffic and can't change gears.

What's your experience with them as far as feel goes?

I'm kinda liking the idea of being able to shift with my hand/fingers rather than move my elbow, or without having to nudge over my passengers arm ( like a true lazy fat fart) LOL

Short shifters often require more effort (due to the leverage change)
You can also make life harder for the gearbox syncro

Talk to Greg Roles on this forum. He sells dieselgeek shortshifter kits. They are up there among the better ones & the price is reasonable.

Fair point Martin. I've never tried either of the above systems so in theory they sound good, especially after reading reviews, but maybe not for me. I'd love to try somones though. Any idea of re-sellers in Melbourne or someone has drive with one?

Greg will be able to tell you who in MEL has a dieselgeek shortshifter.

I would have had one on mine but the 1.8tsi 6speed is different to the 2.0tsi. Dieselgeek was pretty sure that the 5speed kit would work on my gearbox & Greg was happy to order one in for me & accept a return if it didn't work. (ie: he's pretty easy to deal with). I didn't bother in the end as a few other things came up & priorities changed.

The other way you could do it is the "quadrant" off the R32/R fits & shortens the throws (but not the side-to-side). They sometimes come up for sale. This is how I found out my gearbox was different - a mate sent me the north/south selector off his R32 & it didn't even come close to fitting.

I had the dieselgeek in my S3 for around 4 years and its a huge improvement (in my view) over OEM.

Yes its shorter (the whole point) and it is a little bit stiffer (logically), but not unbearable.

Its also a bit notchier - (clunky is a bad word), kinda like a rifle-bolt action.

Installation is important, because it requires adjustment, to get the feel spot on, so you need to be knowledgeable about what you are doing or pay someone else (only takes one hour)

First thing I'll do is try the feel of a dieselgeek and also a cheaper stick only as I posted above. I'm not THAT keen on spending $200 but I will defs consider it. For a lousy $60, I'd be keen to give the OP one a shot!
