Search eBay, but $180-200 for a dynamat extreme bulk pack. Enough for the boot/rear wheel arches. Then add some mass loaded vinyl over the top and it should be very quiet. Order the under bonnet mat that diesels have and clip it on to further reduce engine noise. That's pretty much all I'm doing. Would love to do the front doors also, but waiting on briskoda for someone to do a how to, considering the airbag sensors in there.

    So thin! Just one layer?

Yeah, just one layer over the surface. Make sure you completely do the spare wheel well, and as much of the boot floor and rear wheel arches as possible. It makes a noticable difference in road noise to every car I've done with it. This time i'm going to add mass loaded vinyl based on a few peoples recommendation over the top of the dynamat as it reduces different frequencies to dynamat.

EDIT: If you can, get one of the little rollers to help press it down onto the surface. The first car I did by hand and a few blunt objects, and I couldnt use my fingers for days afterwards! A good sharp Stanley knife is also invaluable, along with a heap of spare blades.

I don't think I would bother with the bonnet insulation. They took it away as people complained that there was hardly any engine noise for a sporty car. They kept it in the diesel. I would be hard pressed to hear engine noises at any time really.

Front doors get good results, but again have to wait until someone pulls them apart and learns about the airbag sensors.

dArK5HaD0w you have been very selective about placing the Dynamat. I have done two full treatment on my cars. First was my now sold My06 WRX sedan and current N9 Polo Gti. It is good stuff. Lots of work pulling interiors apart. And you have to very carefull of the razor sharp Dynamat edges. Wear gloves and be alert.
    Cheers Al

    correct.
I've read that covering every single visible space with dynamat has no advantage, and can in fact add to the vibration from the panels in the worst case.
strategically placed strips of dynamat is all that is required in order to minimise/negative the vibration on the panels - hence reducing the noise being generated.
a roller and stanley knife most certainly helps.

On the Mk2, I find a lot of noise comes up through the front wheel arches & firewall. t means you either have to insulate the wheel arches (bitumen paint?) or add some sound deadener under or over the carpet (mre floor mats, etc). It's mainly tyre noise.
