I know that you can get the cables cheaper on the net but the fact is the dealers do not tell people that the MDI by itself is useless. In 2011 when you can by a $15,000 car with a USB interface its criminal that VW charge several hundred dollars for MDI PLUS more money for cables for what is in effect a propriety USB just because the Germans are too bloody minded to admit that they got it wrong by not using an international standard interface.
The MDI is now standard on VW Tiguan and probably on the rest of the VW models (I didn't check them all).![]()
Performance Tunes from $850Wrecking RS OCTAVIA 2 Link
MDI may have become standard for MY2011, but wasn't earlier - $270 option when I purchased. The fact that there were no cables included, and no mention of it pre or during delivery, really left a bad taste in my mouth, and I had a go at the salespeople over it.
Agree entirely with K1W1's comments, but wouldn't be without some sort of digital interface.

Can you get the rubber boot mat with the lip, I hate the plastic ones, if you need to put something through and fold down a seat you have to wrestle the whole thing out. I have a genuine Skoda rubber map with a deep lip and you can just roll it, or actually squash it if need be when putting something longer in. It also doesn't scratch and things don't slide around on it.
I knew there would be a catch with the damn MDI. I haven't looked into it because I don't use much tech gear when I'm in the car. I'm pretty narked I can't just have a 6CD, now I have to get all my CD's put onto a card or something apparently. I'm not even sure what an MDI does exactly so I'm going to have to google. Something that lets you plug ipods and ?? into the car I guess. It's got bluetooth so I can just do that with the phone so I don't need an MDI for that.
All I do is have my phone and listen to CD's.
I was thinking even if I don't have much use for it now, I 'might' get all enthusiastic one day and need it for something. I usually get the 'latest' thing about 3yrs after everyone else when I have no choice so I figured to just get it and when I need it, it's there. It would probably be good for re-sale to have it too.
I'll have a look at the rubber mat but I like the plastic because it's light and easy to just pull out to clean, doesn't flop around. When I need to put something extra long in I take it out so it doesn't crush but the rubber would be handy for that. It would also be nicer for the dogs since it's soft and grippable.
The bluetooth is for streaming music only I believe - no phone connection, needs a separate thign (but I'm happy to be corrected if this has changed over time). MDI is only for accessing music on an ipod/equivalent/hard drive (hence 3 cables). K1W1 is a world renowned expert in getting the best out of putting your music on an SD card though.....
