So I was fishing around with double sided tape on a ruler and hitting the eject button and the card come out.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be reading CDs properly at the moment. Will try again in a week or so. Currently showing "CD: Error"

Go to Jaycar or a Hi fi shop and buy a laser cleaning disc.

You shouldnt have needed to touch the eject button, all that does is pop the lock to let the transport come up off the spindle.
The card probably wouldnt have pushed it down into the working position.
You may have touched the laser with the sticky and put some crap on it.

The cleaning disc which has a small brush on it may be enough to clean it.

The only other way is to disassemble it and clean the laser with Isopropyl alcohol..

Have had a lot of experience with Playstation laser assemblies that used to die with monotonous regularity

Other than what Hillbilly said above, I'd also try a "reset" of the head unit to see if that clears the CD: Error.
