Question about Octavia Scout

Hi All,

I am the VW Golf Owner and now I am wanting to have a big family car. Octavia Scout 103TDI seems a good option for me after some research.

I have some questions here hope current Octavia or Scout owner can help out.

1. Does the 6 speed DSG reliable compare to the 7 speed DSG? My golf has 7 speed DSG but returned to dealership for fixing DSG issue 3+ times. This is the major concern I have now.

2. How much discount can I ask for? (10% off the RRP is what people get from VW)

3. Overall quality? Rattle?

I picked mine up last week. Can't say I've noticed any rattles or bad trim fits etc.

Can't help on the gearbox. It's my first automatic.

The 6 speed DSG is a more robust and reliable unit in comparison to the newer 7 speed. The 6 speed is fitted to the higher torque output engines, where the 7speed is used in the lower powered vehicles.

Quality is good - I drove in a Scout over the Easter long wkend and it was really nice.

If you want a good deal, call my brother Mitchell at Newcastle Skoda. He has a white Scout in the showroom right now. He prices aggressively, so you will be pleasantly surprised.

I picked up my 103tdi scout in November 2011. We have just clicked over 11,000k's in it. I haven't driven a 7 speed so can't compare but the 6 speed has been trouble free. The biggest adjustment I had (from the 5 speed auto in the passat) was that sometimes the dsg hesitates at take off but you learn to live with it and after a while you won't notice. As lucas has said in an earlier post, quality is excellent. It handles surprisingly well and is very economical even with bikes or the hobie cat on the back. I do have a rattle that comes and goes. I think it's the cargo blind at the back. There are magnetic catches that help to keep it secure and I think one is loose enough that it rattles on some road surfaces. It's not there all the time and not bad enough for me to take the blind out, but I'll get them to look at it when we get it serviced. I'm very happy with mine.

Just hit 13,200km. Booked in for the 15,000km service on the 1st May.

Can't comment on the auto box, but the manual is beautiful.
The website quotes $46,921.00 for a vRS TDI manual. I got mine for $42k, without even having to ask. So yeah, a little more than 10%.

Coming from a MY2011 Kia Sorento (amazing quality, believe it!), everything feels pretty much the same, build-wise.
I have zero rattles, even after a weekend and 120km in/around Penrose State Forest.

The ONLY issue I have with it, is that it takes about 5-10min to warm up.
Thats it. Nothing else.

I have a TDI with 6 speed DSG, no problems mechanically at 40,000 km. However, I have LOTS of rattles - 6 different ones I can identify that come and go, 3 can be relied on to occur pretty much every day. Unfortunately about 1/2 were caused by work done on the car (e.g. replace the handbrake surround that goes stiff over time). The rest were there from new. There is mention of rattly Octavias on Briskoda. It's the one thing that I really, really hate about the car to the point of often blinding me to its good points

My advice? If you want one, that's fine. Just be aware the warranty for rattles is NOT 3 years, more like 6 months. They don't advertise that, but most manufacturers are the same. They do vary on how much goodwill they offer though. In my case dealers have variously been deaf, incapable of fixing or unwilling to help. If you have rattles, identify very early (don't wait for a scheduled service) and don't let them off the hook...
