Anyone looking for the poor mans version of the Scout could do a lot worse than getting the car below (exactly the same as what I got a few months ago). 2008 Octavia Elegance 4x4, 66,000 km $21000. (it must be 2 litre despite the ad stating 1.9).

Only differences from the Scout are: PD engine, none of the Scout body plastic mouldings, normal ride height, 16" wheels (the latter two I prefer).

I've had my Scout since Jan 2010 - manual obviously. The only rattle is the luggage cover when left open, although I haven't done a lot of gravel driving - probably 300-400km (maybe more) out of 25,000km.

My only issues have been DPF related, which comes down to reading about the DPF in the owners manual and following the recommendations to the letter, especially if you do mostly stop-start or short trip inner city running.

My previous car was a Gen IV Outback, and the Scout stomps all over that for perceived build quality, interior finish and driving experience. Rear legroom and dealer availability are the only areas I'd put the Subaru ahead, although the dealer situation seems to be improving. I'd happily recommend the Scout, although I'm looking toward the Passat Alltrack as my next car, purely because of two growing boys.

Went to test drive today. Excellent car, nice handleing, feel same as driving my golf. Ordered premium 103TDI DSG with 2 extra years warranty, $45k (Leasing Price). Very happy. Thanks everyone.
