Anyone know if this has a benefit? Since I've lowered the wagon it grabs this on speed bumps, and if it does nothing I'll remove it! Can someone help?

Flat out down con rod straight it might have some sort of positive aerodynamic affect but at anything up to normal highway speeds spoilers, diffusers and all the other go fast look stuff on cars is exactly that, go fast look.

its probably on the car for a reason. it wouldn't be there otherwise. remember some European motorways have higher speed limits than ours. it may also be there to protect the fuel tank.

While there might be a reason for the fitment, it might not be relevant to how we use the car. eg: roof rails are there to fit cross bars but if the owner has no items to carry on the roof then the roof rails are pure aesthetics.

Also fog lights (for many), chrome exhaust tips, the weights on the LHR of a fabia, sound system, sunroof, rear spoiler etc

So why does a vRS need a rear spoiler when the standard version does not and they both drive on the same roads in any given country presumably governed by the same speed limits?

As I said earlier and normal highway speeds the go fast stuff is there for looks only. It's called marketing in case you have never heard of it.

the vrs is the premium model. it needs things to set it apart of the base and mid-level models.

so youd be ok paying $40k (around) for a car that looked and handled exactly the same as the base model, but had a 2L turbo diesel or petrol engine? im going to say no.

also, i remember something else hanging down under the car. it may also be for water from the road to divert it around certain areas.

Sure, the VRS has extra bits to differentiate it from the cheaper models but none of these items are necessary for the process of getting from point A to point B. The OPs fuel tank may have some big-arse diffuser on it but it is probably purely cosmetic/aesthetic & has no practical purpose.

I don't understand what you mean. there's no contradiction. I didn't say they weren't necessary, but they assist with differentiating models.

you listed a few items a few posts above that clearly aren't there for aesthetic purposes.
