Not such thing as running in oil in the vag cars.
I've always changed oil in our cars at 1500km and then every 5,000-7,500km. we have on problems with our engines no oil leaks etc.

So, no it's not better to leave the factory oil in the engine, because in 12 months when it gets drained it will be at least 18months old. I even had an older man who bought his Yeti brand new but almost 24 months old, that engine tasted new oil 3 years after the car was made.

I had no issues either, that car is with my parents now at 9 yrs old. My Mk3 was 3mths old when I got it and seeing as it did nothing in that time until I drove it and in other countries that oil is made to last well beyond the schedules here I'm ok with waiting until the 12mth mark. Always each to their own, but the oil these days is quite different to not even 10 yrs back. If they run in them mostly too, you wouldn't be expecting iron filings floating about as much. If I did track days it would be entirely different.

Yes, today's oils are different, they protect the environment first.

Absolutely. Today's TDI engine run more EGR than ever before, more regenerations. I change engine oil and oil filter before summer and before winter. The engine oil in engine oxidase from the day it's put in the engine, unlike the oils in the transmissions which are better sealed.

No one gets oil tested so no one here can tell you whether it is a good thing or not. I ran a fleet of vans and trucks, all European and all Diesel, we changed on manufacturers recommendations, tested the oil and could have gone a lot further as the oils were all up to spec when changed. The truck supplier said they had run oils out to 75,000km with no detriment to the motors but they didn't like to as the mechanical checks were too far apart. My personal cars are all changed on specified manufacturer intervals and have never used oil between changes but I have never tested the oils, just observed the results.

Actually there were some people who used to post more often here that did with their 2008 118 Octavia and after a few changes found there was no point doing it earlier. They were fine.

If you go into enough details, you'd have found out that the diesel engine oil for the trucks is bit different to VW504/507 oils or any engine oil that you buy in your local parts store. The trucks also have much bigger sumps than the cars, are driven 8 hours or more per day.
