    Oil Use !

Now done 5500 km's over six months and checked the oil the other day. Out of boredom really rather than any real thought that it might be down. I find it's half way down the two marks on the stick! I would put that down 1/2 a litre over 5000 km's - not ideal.

    Any thoughts on this?

    Normal for a new engine?
    Normal for the 90 TSI?

    Cheers
    Steve.

Normal for new, keep an eye on it and get the proper grade oil to top up. Did you do the run in procedure in the manual? Is it mainly highway or 80km/hr and above or lots of stop start? Some do it until the run in oil is changed at the first service and then it goes away but make sure you if you haven't followed the run in procedure to at least do the part once it gets more kms.

VW says up to 500ml in 1000km is normal so I think you are doing well.

    Halfway down the cross-hatched area isn't quite 500ml - probably closer to 400ml so that's a plus.

As woofy said, it's normal for new engines to use some oil - especially in the first 5000km & VWs tend to take about 15,000km to seal up (or the use copious amounts forever).

If the dealer is conveniently located then get them to top it up for free. Otherwise get some 504.00 or 502.00 spec oil & top it up.

BTW: VW have an unusual requirement for checking the oil - they want it done hot after letting the car sit for 10-20minutes. If the oil is hot it will read a little bit fuller.

You sound like you've got one of the better units. Lucky you!

I'd be happy with that amount! That's about the usage for 1500-2000km for me.

    That's very normal oil consumption.
It looks like that you have your last car for more than 10 years, since all new engines are using very light viscosity oils and will consume some oil, which wasn't the case in 90' or late nineties.

90tsi isn't generally an oil burner.

How many kilometres have you done? If it's less than 5000km then you are still running-in & they won't do anything until after 5000km.

Don't do the top-ups yourself. Go back to the dealer & insist they supply the oil, record the top-ups in their records system against your vehicle. Keep a written log book as well & insist they sign it including amount added, mileage & date.

1000mL/1000km is not normal. VWs upper limit for normal oil use is 500mL/1000km. It's all in your owners manual - you must have missed that bit.

There are a million threads about oil usage & engine run-in scattered through VWwc. Plenty of reading about how to run-in your engine. Plenty of reading about excessive oil usage & how to get your dealer to start working through the issue.

If you think your dealer is fobbing yopu off then try another dealer or escalate to Skoda Customer Care.

    sorry, read 09 as 90.

Suggest you escalate to Skoda Customer Care using your statutory warranty & try to get it sorted through them. You won't get out of it FOC but Skoda/VW AU should contribute "as a goodwill gesture" providing you can show the vehicle has been serviced IAW the manufacturers schedule/specifications.

The first thing they need to ascertain is why it's burning oil. It might be something as simple as a bad PCV valve.

Has it always done this or is it a recent occurance?
How long have you had the vehicle?
What service history has it had?
What specific oil are you currently using?

If you don't have confidence in the dealer then maybe pay for an initial diagnosis by one of the highly regarded independants up that way. There's at least one in BNE & another down on GC.
