Octavia vRS: DSG Gearboxes, advice please!

    Hi guys

Im planning on getting a second hand vRS soon -very excited. Ideally I'd love to buy a manual but they are few and far between so a DSG it is. Can people give me their thoughts on them.

    - Are they problematic?
    - If Im looking for a second hand car, how many km's travelled is too many?

Any advice and what to look out for, would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

    Are they problematic?

    - They are the 6 speed wet-clutch version of the DSG so are not affected by the recent VW DSG woes (7 speed dry-clutch version). If they are serviced according to regular schedule they are generally pretty robust. Some units can exhibit shuddering, or aggressive takeup of the clutches on moderate take-off. If you feel this in testing, stay away. Could indicate a problem with clutch packs or mechatronics.

How many KMs is too many?

    - How long is a piece of string? As long as vehicle has been maintained according to proper guidelines then that is a question only you can answer, as generally kms will guide price.

Any car is only as good as its service history, do your checks and you will have the best chance of a good car for years to come.

I've got the same model as kamold. It's going in for 45K service next week. Very happy with the DSG. Love the seamless shifts. My wife has one in her Golf VI, and she's of the same opinion.

I'm well and truly over having a manual car for a daily city drive. I find the DSG still lets me stay in touch with my inner ratbag by pulling the stick back into Sport mode, or when on something like The Kings Hwy near Batemans Bay, or the Moss Vale Rd between Kangaroo Valley and Nowra, around Wisemans Ferry - the sorts of roads I used love pushing bikes around - I can have a bit of fun with the DSG floppy paddle shifters. Mrs BS and the dog in the back aren't too thrilled about it when I do, but the DSG affords me the potential to have a lot more input when driving than a conventional automatic does.

I love my DGS and will never look back.

Had 5 and 6 speed manuals and auto planetary autos and nothing beats the DSG IMO.

for people complaining about shift points or D not being sport enough and S being too sporty; Use the paddles. that's what they are for.

as for reliability. mines missed a beat 1 time. false neutral about 8k ago. hasn't shown up since.

It was the DSG that first got me interested in Skoda. I have driven my brother-in-law's R32 a few times in Switzerland - it has the DSG in it and I always loved it. When I got crap service at the VW dealership, something in my head reminded me that Skoda use the same gearbox. So I went down the road to the Skoda dealership and the rest is history.
