the smelly stuff is microscopic.
Change it every 12m regardless of how it looked
The filter was clean as. A few small leaves were in the filter only and not wet/mouldy or smelly at all.
I just vacuumed it and maybe that should be satisfactory - I had the issue of smelly air when changing between a/c on and a/c off.

I used to think I was anal-retentive until I started getting involved in car forums
You can get an aerosol can of goo you squirt in the AC to clean out mould that supposedly grows in there.

I've run the autoglym on my sisters jetta with good results. Prime the cap, place in footwell and run the aircon on high and recirculate without a cabin filter. Once the can is depleted, pop in the new filter and run for a few minutes.
Cheers guys ... In due for some products from the boys at carcareproducts and will try the autoglymm out
The air con sprays didnt work for me - for the same price you can replace the filter and be certain the smell will go.
I replaced the filter at the same time too Lucas.
Glenn 20 or one of the similar supermarket products. Much cheaper

hahah .......... well that's what I used last weekend ...
I removed the old filter and sprayed glen 20 into the filter and removed the leaves and dirt in there.
Next thing I'll do is to remove the filter and spray Glen 20 through the system without the filter for a few minutes.
Next step would be to change the filter to a new one - the car has only done 14,000 kms so I think it's fine.
Thanks for all the info guys,

If there are visible leaves & dirt then the filter is stuffed.
It's irrelevant if you've done 14,000km or 140,000km. Australia has a massively higher pollen & dust count than Europe & the humid weather makes it worse.
I know all this crap because I used to have to write specifications for ground support equipment & the European (esp English) based stuff needed major modifications (eg: Cooling systems with heat exchangers doubled in surface area) to work properly in Australia. I used to get emails all the time asking if I'd put an extra zero on the PPM figures.
In Australia, change the filter every 12 months - they are cheap if you don't buy from the dealers.
