As long as you stick with VW504/507 approved oil, it should be ok. I believe Castrol is the factory fill. My car seems to be needing a top up every 7000km or so, I used Shell Helix Ultra 5W-30 as it's readily available in the servo.
Hi,
I had the 'check oil level' light on the way to work this morning, haven't check it yet, but I am assuming it needs a top up(car only done 3800kms though).
I am wondering if anybody knows what brand of oil is it in the Octavia RS MK3(the oil from the factory)?
Otherwise does it matter if different brands of oil in the car?
Thank you.

The service adviser from the dealership said it is Castrol 5w-30 full synthetic, he said I can pop up and they will top it up for me ( free of charge I am assuming?),
I guess I will just go there this afternoon.
That's another option and yes it should be free of charge.

Thank you Reza, I might keep a bottle of oil in the boot next time I go for a long trip, just in case.

The brand doesn't matter as long as it is certified to the specification. Shell, Castrol, Penrite, Liqui-Moly, Fuchs, Mobil1 are all VW certified (and there are others). Nulon are tight and have the numbers 504.00/507.00 on the bottle but haven't paid VW for the testing / certificate so I would avoid them.
If it's a diesel it has to be 507.00 because of the DPF.
If it's a petrol then you can use either 502.00 or 504.00 without issue. 504.00 is the better spec though.
Having the oil light come on at 3800km is disconcerting but it's a new engine and will hopefully seal up with use.
Have you checked the oil since you took delivery of the vehicle? Maybe it was low from day 1? The owners manual says to check the level every fuel fill. Given you know it uses about 1L/4000km I'd be inclined to check the level every 1500 - 2000km and not let it go below the low mark on the cross-hatch. When the light comes on it's right at the limit IMO.

I must say I am not a very handy man around the engine bay, and I was lazy, so I did not check the oil level, I will start to do so after this top up.
Is it true that the differences between the highest and the lowest reading of the dipstick is only 0.5L? I read this in some other forum(Briskoda I think)

Have you checked your tyre pressures since purchase?
500ml from the bottom mark to the top mark sounds about right. Maybe a fraction more but I've never paid much notice.

^ i believe its closer to 1L on my Golf from the bottom of the hash mark on the dipstick to the full mark. But too be honest, i don't pay too much attention - i just pour slowly and check it a few times until its right on full.
