Ya, I check every 3-4 weeks, amazed me when I see one of those guys who pump their tires from 12 PSI all the way to 36 PSI(and I had to wait for 10+ mins for him to pump the tires up), I guess I am like one of those guys to you people's eyes, except it is for the engine oil in my case.
So, I planned to visit the dealer, but Sydney north's traffic on a Friday avo is unbelievable ,so I ended up buying a 5L bottle of Castrol Edge 5W-30 VW 504 from Repco, they only have couple brands with that spec, so I picked the Castrol as it was the oil in the car.
Open the bonnet and check dipstick ,it was down to about 3mm below the minimum mark on the dipstick,Topped up the car to about 65% of min to max, didn't want to overfill. and it was fine, the warning sign gone.
Thank you Guys.:cookie:
I checked regularly and even noted consumption in my service book. It used about half a litre during the break-in period. I reached the bottom line at about 7000kms, put a litre of the Penrite stuff in (to the top line) and it doesn't seem to have used any significant amount since. We're now at 14,000.
Yup that's the one, checked the bottle, Extra ECT or something. Quite expensive too, 20 bucks for the 1L top up. My local Shell seems to carry them all the time.
I usually almost have to use the whole 1L bottle whenever the dipstick indicator is at the minimum level.
Just check on the label that is says APPROVED for use with VW and the rating as some are rated 502/505 which is NOT for diesels.
I cant find an extra ECT in the list of approved oils in either rating.
Very few places carry the 504/507 and usual best avialable is the Penrite Enviro+ 5w 30 at Autobarn or Supercheap
Ultra Extra isn't sold anymore.
It's Helix Ultra ECT 5w-30.
The labelling is really crap so you have to be observant.

Time to get an updated list of approved oils I guess as the one I have is a few years old now.
Anyone know of a new one
Nah, just use Australian made, VW approved and certified Penrite, keep a 1L in the boot, and take 5L with you for you service. Just get the correct one for your petrol or diesel engine.
buy from supercheap or autobarn.
If you need emergency fill up you need to check that teh oil you are putting in is VW approved. But you should have 1 L of penrite in the boot.
Thread dig from hell :)
I'm confused. The Owners Manual has two separate tables that specify oil specs for the 2.0 162, 169kw TSI engine.. One for "Vehicles with variable service intervals" for which they specify VW504.00, and a second table for "vehicles with fixed service intervals" for which they specify VW502.00.
No viscosity mentioned either, so I'm assuming the certification for each spec relies on a certain viscosity. IE all VW504.00 spec oil seems to be 5W-30.
Buy some Penrite Enviro+ 5w-30 from Autobarn or similar Probably cheap this week as they have an Easter sale on.
Dont worry about all the crap in the book
ALL AUS VW are service at 15000km or 12 months whichever comes first. You can use 502spec but 504/507 is good for both diesel and petrol and it doesnt hurt to use a higher spec oil in any way.
I use it in the Polo and prev Passat TDI as is easier just to use one.
